On November 15th, 2012 over 20 GNA students went to Tufts Medical Center in Boston to meet three nurse practitioner alumni from the Connell School of Nursing at Boston College. Please check out the video of the alumni speakers. They each discuss their background and current jobs as nurse practitioners.
We found the discussion helpful, and got lots of great advice and reassurance about our future ahead. If you missed this event, here are some things that we learned from the panelists:
- Christa said: How to look for non-traditional ways of finding jobs
- Nicole said: Resume advice, interviewing tips, job application strategies, weaknesses in coursework at BC, NP board tips
- Kristin said: To keep the resume short and focus on the cover letter, the timeline for taking the boards and looking for jobs, books that would be helpful for the boards and clinical, how to look for a job.
- Sangmi said: Sarah and Kara shared their story about how they ended up being in medical center instead of going to a primary care based clinic. They gave us a very practical advice that we should open up our options. Also, they shared useful resources (website, books) for us to keep up with updated knowledge to be a competent NP. The different work demands between a medical center and primary care setting was something I didn't know. Place like Tufts require you to know billing and coding, but not in VA hospital. It is something that we'd better keep in mind. Plus, very helpful ideas about resume and interview experience. I could imagine what the interview setting would be like from Nicholas's story.

- Yoonsun said: I've never met any NPs who are working at the moment. It was really nice to see them and hear a lot of tips in terms of job opportunity ( it was really nice to know that many big hospitals want NPs!), tips for resume and study for certificate exams.
- Kristine said: I learned about various methods for applying for jobs, useful websites for job applications and the importance of cover letters.
- I also learned about various reference books that are helpful for new NPs.
