GARDEN DESCRIPTIONS
BROADWATER A secluded acre moving from formal to informal to woodland composed of standard oaks and hazel. Mature shrubs and borders redesigned in 2017 with an emphasis on plants that grow in shade. All heavily pruned by expert deer. Strawberries and prosecco on sale.
FURZEFIELD COTTAGE Ample lawns which gently slope to the water. Recently extended ponds are newly planted. Walled garden for vegetables and cutting flowers. Fruit cage. Many mature trees and shrubs plus over 200 roses. W.C. WHEELCHAIR ACCESS. NO DOGS
STRANGE HALL NORTH A garden of three halves; West-rose beds and rockery, shrubs and herbaceous perennials sheltered from prevailing winds by mixed trees and tall hedging. The courtyard leads to a modest herb garden and Rectory Farm’s old cattle pond to the East; then an orchard and a secluded lilly pond to read by. W.C. WHEELCHAIR
GLEBE HOUSE is tucked away near Rectory Farm on Walton Lane. The garden was created for the adjacent Strange Hall, and was known as the ‘Italian Garden’ because of the many unusual trees that were planted in the 1950s. The old grass tennis court is used for family croquet and Glebe House is still a secret hideway for keen gardeners.
TENETS North facing woodland border with trees, hellebores, camellias, foxgloves and hydrangeas. Assorted roses growing into old fruit trees with viticella clematis. Gravel garden. WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
CREDE HOUSE A relaxed English cottage garden. A summerhouse nestles in the roses and a shaded water garden is hidden amongst acers and ferns. There’s a large walled fruit and vegetable area and an avenue of prunus Royal Burgundy completes the scene. WHEELCHAIR (via courtyard)
TREMYLETS is a 16th Century thatched cottage surrounded by a garden which stretches from the edge of the recreation field to the fields of Crede Farm. The garden was originally laid out in the mid 1970s when the cottage was restored. It has been extended and developed over the last 11 years with new beds and planting. It includes a large collection of David Austin roses, 2 ponds, some unusual iron work, wisterias, peonies and some stunning views of Kingley Vale.
SOUTHFIELD HOUSE has two bird and insect friendly borders to the left of the house as you look at it, a pond where birds can drink and a walled-off scruffy shed and greenhouse area for potting and growing vegetables. To the right is one border which has low and large shrubs designed more for creepy-crawlies to move freely.
FEYGATE Large garden packed with a variety of plants. Numerous design combinations in both sun and shade. Interest throughout the year as all plants have been chosen for the impact of their shape, form, texture and colour on the border as a whole. NO WHEELCHAIR ACCESS. NO DOGS
MONTROSE As a relatively new person to gardening I’m still enjoying experimenting. This year we are focusing on reducing the size of some hedges to improve views from room to room.
CREEK END This is a sheltered garden with a mixture of shrubs, herbaceous perennials and a growing collection of pots. Look out for the bonsai collection and a special strawberry tube.
ALONGSIDE We moved to Bosham in 2007 and redesigned this small garden. The trees and shrubs have reached maturity now but of course there have been changes. Roses have done well but this year I have given up my fight against the box tree moth caterpillar and have planted ilex crenata instead in one area, but put alpines and geranium sanguinem in the other. We have plenty of wildlife with a hedgehog, grass snake and slow worms visiting us regularly. We look forward to welcoming visitors!
TEA GARDEN In the heart of the Village. Tea, coffee and home-made cakes from 11 til 4. Pimms, Sausage ‘n bun BBQ. Plant sales. Music from the Ems Valley Strummers.
MILL HOUSE Adjacent to Holy Trinity Church and running alongside the Millstream, this is a garden of two halves. Walk around the ancient millponds and reed beds where King Canute’s daughter is reputed to have met a watery end, and soak up the unique views of the historic Church from the walled garden. WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
BURNESIDE An exposed waterfront garden that has to survive wind and salt. In the lee of the house, a pleached beech hedge divides the plot in two. To the rear, a corner arbour to sit and enjoy indulgent tropical planting; closer to the house, old apple trees, herbaceous perennials and a colourful dry terrace. Mature trees include a white walnut, beech and a wild service tree. Small selection of homemade preserves for sale. Access by footpath only (see map)
SOUTH MEADOW A garden of contrasts. In the exposed front garden the harbour view is framed by deep herbaceous borders backed by evergreen hedges. In the more sheltered back garden I have a traditional courtyard herb garden and a woodland bank featuring grasses. WHEELCHAIR ACCESS (from rear of garden only)
EASTFIELD COTTAGE A garden that has been growing and changing for over 30 years! It contains a mixed border of shrubs, herbaceous plants and roses. A gravel garden and a newly planted area of beds with a pergola alongside. We grow many roses, both old varieties and new. WHEELCHAIR
THE MILLSTREAM HOTEL Please visit the Millstream Hotel to experience a traditional English country garden with new ideas based on old principles of flowers, fragrance and form; featuring long herbaceous borders, a stream, a babbling brook and waterfall, well manicured croquet lawn, fragrant roses and herbs. As you take a turn around the garden, you will find interesting poetry and popular garden sculptures, some moving gently in the coastal breeze.
Visitors welcome to take time out to visit the peace and tranquility of the Bosham Burial Ground, including a new re-wilding area.
