Dr. rer. nat. habil. Boran Altincicek

Consultant for M & E, Statistics and Research

Background

Dr. rer. nat. habil. Boran Altincicek has been graduated from the University of Gießen in Germany. During preparing his Ph.D. thesis in Biology, he and his colleagues co-founded a biotech research spin-off company (Jomaa Pharmaka GmbH). Multidisciplinary research in host-pathogen-interactions and immunology, writing of patents and scientific publications were part of his work. After two years as Post-doc at the Institute of Biochemistry in Gießen, he took the opportunity to lead a research group and to investigate molecular adaptation of diverse insects to pathogens and the phenotypic plasticity and evolution of the insect immunity at the Institute of Phytopathology and Applied Zoology. Self-dependent teaching, own third-party funding, and numerous publications in international scientific journals resulted in his German “Habilitation” in the year 2009. Then, funded by the German Research Foundation-DFG with the Heisenberg fellowship in Zoology, he got the opportunity to work on insect ecology and evolution as a Visiting Scientist and Lecturer with Professor Nicole Gerardo at the Emory University in Atlanta, GA, USA. Prior to his current working as freelancer and consultant in Lilongwe, Malawi and later in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, he was “Privatdozent” (equivalent to Assoc. Professor) in Zoology and Ecology at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Bonn, Germany.

Since 2012, he works as a Consultant for M & E, Statistics and Research in Southern Africa (focus on Malawi), Horn of Africa (Ethiopia) and Germany, for the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Research Triangle Institute (RTI), Concern Worldwide, Trocaire, C12, Comit, GFA and more.

Professional qualifications:

• Biologist (Dipl. Biol.) (1997)

• Doctorate in Life Sciences (Dr. rer. nat., Ph.D. equivalent) (2002)

• Habilitation in Agricultural Sciences (Dr. rer.nat. habil.) (2009)

•> 10 years of experience in leading own research projects in molecular biology, zoology and agricultural sciences starting from third-party funded research and budget management over team leading and statistical data analysis to writing publications and reports.

•> 7 years of experience as consultant in development cooperation as a monitoring and evaluation expert with deep knowledge on M&E systems, tablet-based data collection, sampling and statistical analysis of base, mid and endline studies and in evaluations in food security, rural development, energy, gender and education projects; capacity building and training of specialists and executives.
