BWBL Game Play Rules
In general, MHSAA rules and middle-school rules apply. 20 minute halves, stop time in the last minute of the game (not half), teams are encouraged to sub every five minutes, everyone plays… EVERY PLAYER WILL PLAY IN EVERY HALF OF EVERY GAME.
Half-court man defense only. No zone allowed and no double-teams unless they naturally occur in a help situation on penetration.
Zone defense warnings can be administered by the game referee at any time. Penalty for playing zone defense is offense receives a baseline out of bounds situation under their basket
In the last five minutes of the game, teams can press (FC man) with a 15-points-or-less margin. The team down by 15+ points may still press at this time
Shoot 2 FT on shooting fouls, shoot 2 FT on all fouls in last minute, sudden-victory overtime
Multiple Team Fouls Penalty: 2 FTs on all 10+ team fouls (scorekeeper tracks team fouls)
Each team gets one timeout per half (one minute), no carryover
Officials may call 5-second violations during closely guarded situations or BLOB/SLOB situations
Officials may call 3-second violations when offensive player remains in offensive 3-second key
Unsportsmanlike Conduct Rule (for players, coaches, parents, and fans)
If players, coaches or fans are behaving in an unsportsmanlike manner, the host school may invoke the sportsmanship rule. The "sportsmanship rule" is as follows:
The team that makes a major "unsportsmanlike" mistake will result in the opposing team getting 10 points on the scoreboard during the game.
THIS IS A TEACHING LEAGUE. THE END GOAL IS DEVELOPMENT, NOT WINNING. COACHES, PLAYERS, AND PARENTS WILL NEED TO SHARE THIS PERSPECTIVE.
