The purpose of this page is for those using Birds of East Asia to be able to report any additions and corrections, and to keep up-to-date with additions and changes.

This is not the place for general comments or criticisms, but for constructive additional specific information concerning the text, maps or illustrations, that will help other users of the book. All information provided will then become available for, and be acknowledged in, any subsequent edition.

Wilson's Snipe

Included as "Extralimital", however, information has come to light showing that it breeds/has bred in Chukotka, northeast Russia.

Alström P, Saitoh T, Williams D, Nishiumi I, Shigeta Y, Ueda K, Irestedt M, Björklund M, and Olsson U (2011) The Arctic Warbler Phylloscopus borealis – three anciently separated cryptic species revealed. Ibis 153: 395-410.

This paper proposes that the Arctic Warber Phylloscopus borealis be split into three separate species: Arctic Warbler Phylloscopus borealis (continental Eurasia and Alaska), Kamchatka Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus examinandus (Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Hokkaido and Kurile Islands), and Japanese Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus xanthodryas (Japan except Hokkaido) based on the congruent variation in mitochondrial DNA, morphology and vocalizations.

Imai A, Nomura A, Iozawa H, Ikenaga H (2011) The first record of Black-naped Monarch Hypothymis azurea in Japan, on Yonaguni-jima, Okinawa Prefecture. Jpn J Ornithol 60: 110-113.

This paper describes and illustrates (photographs) the first record of this species in Japan, reported on Yonaguni-jima 13~17 April 2008.

"J" to be added to the title line for the species on p302.

Haga H, & Nuka, T (2009) The first record of Long-tailed Koel Eudynamys taitensis in Japan. Jpn J Ornithol 58 (2): 206-207.

This paper describes and illustrates (photographs) the first record of this species in Japan (and also for East Asia) reported at Choshi, Chiba Prefecture on 5~6 May 2008.

New species for Japan included:

Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher (Black-backed Kingfisher) Ceyx erithaca

2010 Changes made to the Plates in the 2nd Printing

Swinhoe's Pheasant

Page 36, the male Swinhoe's Pheasant image was corrected to show its bright coral red legs (not blue-grey), the female's were also corrected to a slightly brighter shade.

Dark-sided Flycatcher and Grey-streaked Flycatcher

Plate 202 made Dark-sided Flycatcher appear much larger than it should be compared with Grey-streaked. Re-scaled in the 2nd printing to the same size.

Plate 202, also corrected to show that Grey-streaked has longer primaries, with greater primary extension (essentially the depiction of the wing tips of the two species was reversed.)

Western Meadowlark

On plate 226, the Western Meadowlark was missing most of its black breast collar especially at the front; this was corrected.

Map updated to show use of major Polynia in winter off Chukotka

Northern Fulmar

The breeding area in the Kamchatkan/Chukotkan region added to the range map.

Sooty Shearwater

The summer distribution was shown as far too extensive in the Bering Sea; corrected.

Fork-tailed Storm Petrel

P88 map corrected, doesn't winter in the Bering Sea or northern Sea of Okhotsk.

Sabine's Gull

P216 map corrected, doesn't winter in the Bering Sea.

Arctic Redpoll

P468, range corrected to show its range extending as far east in Chukotka as the Bering Strait.
