Write to me if you fit the profile that is mentioned here, or if you don't and can give a compelling reason. The only(!) requirements are that you have to be passionate about research, willing to work extremely hard, have the ability to think logically, and are willing to work across disciplines, i.e. think of your current subject or discipline as a foundation, not a wall.
If you are interested, please send me a CV and a letter clearly mentioning the position you are interested in.
There are various possibilities for carrying out research in this group, listed below.
I. Postdoctoral associates
Prereq: PhD in allied field (no requirements regarding particular discipline, since research will be interdisciplinary)
Anticipated duration 1-3 years
Postdoc applications are considered throughout the year. After the initial interaction to establish congruence of interests and after defining a project, postdocs are expected to apply for a CSIR RA position or a N-PDF or other national level funding.
II. PhD
Prereq: PhD students will be selected as per the NCL or IGIB process. Typically topics are not 'assigned' but a student finds his or her preferred area within a year of joining the program and learning basic modeling and simulation techniques. Please write to me if you have questions about the topics or possibilities for a particular year. The other option is to work with me as a Project Assistant and then register for a PhD (again through the NCL or IGIB process).
Duration: 3-5 years
III. Project Assistants:
Prereq: B. Tech. / MTech or MSc with minimum 55% parks
Duration: initial hire for 6 mo, extendable
Current openings for PAs :
PA: Currently no positions are available. Please check after May 2021
IV. M. Tech or MSc project work
Prereq: B Tech or BSc; registration in degree program
Duration: 6 mo-1.5 years
Note: Projects with a duration shorter than 6 months will not be considered. Before writing, please read the text below the summer intern section.
V: Long-term undergraduate projects
Prereq: Enrollment in appropriate course; approval from university/department
Duration: 1-2 years (intermittently, as per course requirements)
1 year (undergraduate project) - restricted to IISER Pune or University of Pune students due to logistics issues unless your university is willing to let you stay at Pune for 8-10 months
VI: Short term undergraduate projects
Prereq: Enrollment in appropriate course; approval from university/department
2-3 mo (Summer research project) : Please do not apply unless you are studying at UoP or IISER-P; or ranked in the top-3 in your UG class (centrally-funded institute) or top 2 in your class (other institutes) or have a significant award such as NTSE or Olympiad selection. If you intend to apply to the Science Academy joint fellowships, please state this in the email.
Please note that for summer students, due to the large number of requests I am unable to consider applications from students who do not fulfill the criteria above. But I do read all applications, so feel free to write to me to argue why I am wrong and your application should be considered.
NCL does not normally provide accommodation to anyone except PhD students and postdocs. No stipends are provided to any summer or final-year-project student. Project assistants get a stipend depending on their qualifications. As such everyone but PhD students and postdocs have to arrange for local housing in Pune and canteen facilities at night/holidays (assuming they can have their lunch in the NCL canteen on working days). Very few exceptions are possible - for instance for IAS fellows.
Please do not contact me and ask me for the information already present here. Also, please make sure you have the necessary qualifications ("prereq") listed below the position title. No exceptions are allowed: these are NCL/IGIB rules, so I can't waive them. Same is true for the lack of support (hostel, food) for undergraduate researchers. I will not respond to such inquiries.
Depending on the number of queries, it may not be possible to respond individually, so apologies in advance. I will make every attempt to reply, and redirect applications to people I think may be interested. I will not reply to applications that are mailed to multiple people, or addressed as Sir/Maam or any email where it is obvious that you have not even taken the time to look at the kind of research in our group.
