13 December 2012

Exam 4 will be held tomorrow morning between 7:30AM and 10AM. We will hold the exam in CR 129 rather than our usual room of CR 214. CR 129 is the large room one floor down from CR 214 that some of you took the exam in last time. I will post signs on the doors to CR 214 in case anyone forgets.

Lectures of November 19 and December 7 are available online in case you missed them or they were too rushed. These two lectures are relevant to several Study Questions for Exam 4.

An online flash card tool is available at Study Blue . I have been referred to it by reliable individuals. Be sure to compose your own definitions for terms to get the greatest effect.

A review session for Exam 4 will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec 11 at 3 PM in Ag 41. A review session will also be held in CR 214 at 7:30PM on Thursday, Dec 13.

Grade reports and graded assignments will be available at these review sessions and also by appointment.

Study Questions have been updated for Exam 4.

All papers submitted last week are graded and available after lecture. Papers turned in more recently are still being graded. These will be graded by early next week. Please resubmit all paper revisions by Friday, Dec 14.

A review session will be held today beginning at 3PM. We will meet in Ag 50 and move to Ag 41 if we need more room.

Current grade reports will be available at the review session today.

There will be a review session Thursday, Dec 13 in CR 214. Additional review sessions will be announced by e-mail.

The mean score for Exam 3 was 74%, which is the highest mean score for an exam this semester, so far. A key to Exam 3 is posted at the bottom of the Lecture Syllabus page.

Please turn in the first draft of you short paper as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. Papers turned in after November 30 will not be graded by Dec 7. Papers turned in after Dec 7 cannot be graded before the end of the semester so you will lose your opportunity to revise and resubmit.

Lab Quiz 2 will be given during regularly scheduled lab meetings this week. If you need to make up missed labs, be sure to arrange this with your lab instructor.

Remember to sign up for open lab sessions next week. Guidance on writing assignments will be given and you can make up missed labs during this time. You may sign up for any lab period with space, no just the lab you are registered for.

Study Questions have been update through today's lecture. Exam 3 will be held next Friday, November 16, beginning as early as 7:00 AM in CR 214. A review session will be held Thursday evening, November 15. You are welcome to arrange smaller review session prior to that.

Exam 2 has been graded and will be returned in class today. The unofficial average score is 71%. 40% of scores were 79 or above. One score was above 100%. A key to the exam will be posted on the Lecture Syllabus page soon. E-mail me if you have questions before or after the key is posted. If you feel an error was made in grading your exam, please arrange to discuss with me.

Study Questions for Exam 2 have been updated.

For submission of lab notes, it is best to compress the file for e-mail attachment and then convert it to a pdf. Your lab instrucor can help with these steps if you are unfamiliar with them.

Extra credit points are available for identifying errors in exams, lab exercises, and lectures. For exams, identify the error with a note on the exam. For labs, send me an e-mail or tell me in person. Points for lab exercise errors will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

A key for Exam 1 has been posted at the bottom of the Lecture Syllabus page. Please use it to answer questions you have about Exam 1 and to check for grading errors on your exam. If you find errors, meet with Dr. Herbert to discuss them.

There is an error in the heading of SECTION C for Exam 1. Each short essay question is not worth 8 points, it is worth 10 points.

A review session for Exam 1 will be held on Thursday evening, September 20 in Classroom 222 (next door to our regular lecture room). It will begin at 7:30PM and continue as late as 9:30PM. Please feel welcome to come and go from this session as you need to.

The Lab Syllabus has been revised to clarify deadlines for submission of lab notes. The revisions are in red. I have asked the lab instructors to subtract points from notes that are submitted late, one point for each day. This policy goes into effect today.

The LIFE 2023 lab, AV 223, is available Wednesday and Friday from 9 AM to noon for “open lab” sessions this week.

Please turn in lab notes within 48 hours after you have completed them. If you have been given extra time to complete the lab, please turn in the lab notes within 48 hours after the extra time. If you encounter technical difficulties completing your lab notes, please inform your TAs and ask for extra time.

Lab meetings begin today, on the first day of classes. For those with Monday lab meetings, be sure to download the lab exercise and lab notebook files from the bottom of the lab syllabus web page. Please bring these to your lab meeting in paper or electronic form.

Welcome to LIFE 2023, the Biology of Plants and Fungi. This class will cover a vast diversity of living organisms and will likely be one of your more demanding courses this semester.

Please attend all lectures and spend 8 or more hours studying for this class each week in order to master the course material. Use the Study Questions to guide your study time. If you need to meet with the instructor for help, please make an appointment by e-mail to do so.

Lab participation will also be important. Labs meet Mondays and Tuesdays and begin on August 27.

In return for your hard work in this class, you will gain a substantive familiarity with much of the diversity of life on Earth and some practical knowledge about how it is useful.
