WASTE GENERATION AND WASTE MANAGEMENT IN SPAIN AND IRELAND.

Technology is in charge of solving human problems by making products. And when these products are "useless", or when humans get tired of them, they become waste.

In the third term, 2ºB and 2ºC students have studied the problem of waste generation and waste management, comparing how waste is managed in Spain and in Ireland.

First, the teacher, assisted by Chris (our language assistant), tried to make them aware of the importance or severity of this topic. For this purpose, we showed them some graphics with data about household waste generated in Spain and Ireland, and pictures showing real problems derived from waste generation with bad waste management policies.

Once students understood we've got a real and global problem, they learnt how Spain and Ireland deal with this problem. We tried to transmit there is much to do in both countries to get the EU objectives for 2025 in recycling rate and porcentage of waste deposited in landfill. And they learnt which policies or good habits could contribute to reach those objectives.

Some classes later, the teacher (and Chris) organised an activity to learn how waste is separated in Spain and in Ireland. The teacher prepared coloured boxes representing the bins in each country. One day, students (organised in teams) had to deposit 25 common waste in the "Spanish bins", and the next day they did the same with the "Irish bins". The team with the most hits would win. And I must admit I was impressed how effective these "gaming activities" can be.
