Sunday – Napoleon, OH to Nappanee, IN. The bike worked really well today. Thanks Jeremy! The wind was out of the WSW and it was brutal! Every pedal stroke felt like I was pushing cement. It was about 90° + today. Although I only covered 100 miles today, I completely abused my body fighting the wind. When I got to Nappanee, IN I stopped at the Shamrock Motel to get a room. I quickly realized this was not going to be where I would stay. I politely told the manager I had changed my mind and kept riding.
A severe thunderstorm was approaching. I saw the Nappanee Inn on the west side of town near Amish Acres. I quickly ducked in and asked about a room. The woman at the desk said yes, and I was in. 2 minutes later the skies opened up. Lots of rain!
The Nappanee Inn was a very nice place however it was very close to the railroad tracks. I noticed two packages of ear plugs on the night stand near the bed. After the first freight train went by I realized I would need to use them if I wanted to get some sleep. After the storm broke I got back on my bike and rode into town to an Italian Deli. I ate a grinder and some chips and headed back to the hotel.
When I returned to the hotel I got some ice to put on my knees. Riding against the wind is taking its toll on my knees. I’m thinking tomorrow is the last day of riding. I am within range of Lisle, IL (126 miles or so).
