Engineering Design and Development(Brownsburg High School)
Project Description
Engineering Development and Design is a high school senior cadre (project) class that students attend for two periods every day. Initially, each student came up with various products or problems that needed to be improved or solved, and shared their ideas with the class. Everybody splits up into groups based on their interests were and the problem they wanted to solve. By taking this class, students receive valuable experience in the process an engineer goes through to develop new ideas. We got a look into the real world of engineering and were able to decide if this was something that we actually wanted to do in the future. Throughout the year, everybody in this group has enjoyed the experience and plan to continue with engineering in college.
On April 27th, we gave our final presentation about the bike, with a working prototype and demonstrations, and have completed the project. All steps and process worked through can be found in the tabs to the left. The working process starts at the top and goes down the list alphabetically.
Problem
Of the 318.9 million people in the United States, 103.7 million Americans ride bikes. The power to move these bikes is applied in the chain, where the motion and sprockets are controlled. Unfortunately, sprockets and chains account for 34.1% of bike related injuries and currently, the process of fixing a faulty chain or sprocket is not permanent and frequent bikers experience chain problems multiple times. This has introduced a problem to our team. We are a group of high school students dedicated to finding a proper solution to a better biking system. Our focus is set on children's bicycles, specifically the drivetrain, but could easily be modified to work with larger bicycles.
