Note:  The church minutes for the prior period covering years1824-1855 (Vol. 1), have been lost.   The last member of the Bethlehem church, Mrs. Nellie Barnes, said that when her father was church clerk he never had seen any earlier minute books, so it had been lost for quite some time ... possibly a casualty of the Civil War times.

NEWS:  Volume 2 of the church records, covering 1856-1925, is now available!

The Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church Preservation Society of Columbia NC has published a new book:  "The Church Book of the Primitive Baptist at Bethlehem Meeting House in Tyrrell County NC,  Book 2:  1856-1925".      This 146-page book includes the church meeting minutes and attendance rosters for the important time around the Civil War, and also features a history of the church and biographies of some  key church figures.  Mentioned are many local families including:  Alexander, Ambrose, Barnes, Brickhouse, Davenport, Holadia, Liverman, Parisher, Phelps, Reynolds, Sawyer, Spencer, Swain, Tarkinton, Voliva, West and many others.  The church was founded in 1824 and this book #2 is the oldest surviving record book from the church, since the first record book #1 was lost.

It was transcribed by our volunteer Mr. Charles Barnes with the basic meeting minutes, attendance rosters and the index of all this data.  Then we added the history of the church and its pastors, with photos and other good stuff.

The book is being offered for sale thru the Tyrrell County Genealogical & Historical Society.  You can find their web page with order form here:
