Bestwood

Bestwood Country Park lies to the northern edge of Nottingham, approximately four miles north of the city centre. The park is jointly owned by Nottinghamshire County Council and Gedling Borough Council; and managed by a team of Country Park Rangers based within the grounds. Over 400,000 visitors each year enjoy the park's wide range of natural features and diverse wildlife habitats. The site is approximately 700 acres (263 hectares), including of 250 acres of woodland, 200 acres of open grassland, and over 50 acres of wetlands.

  • The woodland is an area of mixed secondary woodland on an ancient woodland site. The current management plan calls for gradual control of sycamore and the re-establishment of oak/birch domination.
  • The main grassland is the reclaimed Pit Tip of Bestwood Colliery. An area of open grassland with scrub edges and an area of marshy scrub on top of the old pit. The grassland and heathland remnants are also under stewardship agreements in order to diversify the habitat and increase them.
  • The wetlands mainly occur along the river Leen, with west pastures to the north of an old mill lake, and a small managed reedbed to the south.
