Whitney High School is comprised of 1025 students with a 2009-2010 senior class consisting of 170 students. Selection is based on performance on the California Achievement Test and a district administered writing assessment. The district includes 19 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, 3 comprehensive high schools, a university preparatory school, a continuation high school, and an adult school.
Enrollment in the district is 21,463 K-12 students and approximately 15,000 adult students. Whitney High School’s population is: 0.1% American Indian/Alaskan, 74.9% Asian, 0.4% Pacific Islander, 8.7% Filipino, 1.9% African-American, 6.8% Hispanic, and 7.3% Caucasian.
Whitney High School does not report class rank because each specially admitted student is in the top ranked 10% of ABC Unified and in the 90th percentile.
Curriculum
Whitney offers a comprehensive honors curriculum in English, Social Science, Mathematics, Science and Foreign Language (Spanish, French, and Japanese). Programs are offered in Visual and Performing Arts, and Physical Education.
12 Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in European History, United States History, English Language & Composition, Calculus BC, Biology, Chemistry, Human Geography, Physics, Spanish, Japanese and French Language and Spanish Literature.
35 Honors (H) courses are offered in English levels I, II, III, IV, World History/Geography, World History Model United Nations, Political and Cultural World Geography, U.S. History*, Civics, Economics, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II/ Trigonometry, Math Analysis/ Calculus A*, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry*, Chemistry of Living Systems, Physics*, Spanish Level I, II, III*, IV, French I, II, III, IV, V, and VI*, and Japanese I, II, III, IV*, V, and VI. (Courses with the asterisk * are those identified by the UC as honors.)
Co-Curricular Activities
Whitney High School sponsors a broad program of interscholastic sports and co-curricular activities including Student Government, over 30 different school-sponsored special-interest clubs, service organizations, newspaper, yearbook, marching band, drill team, pep units, community involvement, and CIF sports. Community service is a voluntary program.
Grading System and Scale
Grade point averages are computed on a four (4) point scale:
A= 4, B= 3, C= 2, D= 1, and F = 0.
All grades are not weighted on transcripts. The grading scale is as follows:
A= 90-100, B= 80-89, C=70-29, D= 65- 69, and F= 0-64.
