Shortly after the fall of the Berlin wall, the department has been re-founded as a center for quantitative studies in business administration and economics, covering all of their subfields. The department is now one of Germany’s highest-ranking departments and has ties to many of the leading international centers of academic research. It is situated next to Hackescher Markt, in Berlin’s historical center. Teaching is in English (Master and PhD level) and German (Bachelor).

Freie Universität Berlin is one of the most prominent research universities in Germany. The School of Business & Economics at Freie Universität Berlin is one of the largest of its kind in Germany. Four departments with a total of 19 professors in business administration and 15 professors in economics offer students a wide range of subjects. The department of economics has a long tradition in pursuing internationally recognized cutting-edge research in the fields of Development Economics, International Economics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Public Economics and Statistics and Econometrics. Scholars from renowned national and international universities visit our School for presentations, seminars, guest teaching positions, or guest professorships such as the Deutsche Bundesbank Foundation endowed chair for international monetary policy which has been held regularly by internationally renowned economists.The department cooperates closely with other universities as well as research institutes in the Berlin metropolitan area.

As the school of economics and management of one of the largest Institutes of Technology in Germany, we seek to become the leading school of applied economic sciences within this group. This we aim to achieve by excelling in the design of our teaching and research activities. The Hertie School of Governance was formally founded as a private, non-profit institution late in 2003 by the Hertie Foundation and was established as one of the first professional schools for public policy in Germany. An interdisciplinary focus and policy orientation distinguish the Hertie School's research agenda. Internationally recognised academics make up the core faculty. Together with extended faculty, visiting faculty, postdoctoral researchers, research associates and PhD students they cover a broad spectrum of public policy issues in their teaching and research. First-rate publications and numerous international research projects with partner institutions are further highlights of research at the Hertie School.
