DIW Berlin seeks candidates for the following departments and positions:
1. Climate Policy Department: Applied microeconomics or industrial organization
The Climate Policy Department empirically and theoretically explores how the transition to a low-carbon economy and current economic goals can be made mutually supportive through policy change. In research projects for the European Commission, the German Government and in cooperation with international partners, the Climate Policy team at DIW Berlin assesses the effectiveness of policy instruments and explores opportunities for future policy design to impact operational and investment choices of firms and households.
We are looking for a researcher who is excited to investigate the economic effects of the low-carbon transformation both from a theoretical perspective as well as in the practical application of the industry or power sector. A good understanding of the industry or power sector as well as experience in the context of climate, environmental and energy policy is welcome but not required. The candidate should have a methodological background in one of the following areas: Applied Micro/IO or Econometrics or Operations Research. For more information about this position please contact Prof Karsten Neuhoff, PhD. (kneuhoff@diw.de).
2. Firms and Markets Department: Empirical industrial organization, behavioral economics and structural econometrics
The Firms and Markets department analyzes the determinants of consumer choice, firm behavior, as well as firms’ innovation activities and productivity. Specifically, the department’s research is focused on the study of the causes and outcomes of market-related policies and institutions that affect competition and innovation. These policies include product market regulations, consumer, competition, industrial, and innovation policies.
The Firms and Markets department of the DIW Berlin seeks a PhD economist to conduct innovative research and policy analysis in the areas of industrial organization and behavioral economics. A focus on empirical tools, especially the application of structural econometric models and/or policy evaluation techniques is highly welcome. Candidates must demonstrate the potential to contribute substantially to academic research and policy analysis and to recognize and articulate differing viewpoints related to their work. Researchers at the department do not have any teaching obligations –though voluntary teaching opportunities at all levels exist— but are expected to contribute to the policy work of the department. For more information about this position please contact Prof. Dr. Tomaso Duso (tduso@diw.de).
3. Competition and Consumers Department: Applied microeconomics, especially behavioral and experimental economics
The Competition and Consumers Department aims to enhance our understanding of how human decision making behavior impacts market efficiency and welfare. We use theoretical and empirical tools to conduct policy relevant, applied microeconomic research, focusing especially on behavioral, experimental and industrial economics.
We are looking for a postdoctoral research associate to join us in the fall of 2017 (or earlier). There are no teaching duties and the research associate is hence free to further his/her own research agenda. He/she is however expected to be involved in the activities of the department, for example in the form of joint research projects. We are especially interested in candidates with an interest and background in behavioral and experimental economics. For more information about this particular position, please contact Prof Johanna Mollerstrom, PhD. (jmollerstrom@diw.de).
