The Guitar Program offers four years of guitar study. Students at every level are encouraged to (1) deepen their musical literacy through directed and applied study of notation and repertoire, (2) experience the discipline of regular practice and (3) share their musical accomplishments with others through public performance.
Guitar 1A,1B: First year -- Objectives:
(1) To develop basic reading skills for melodies (treble clef, some sharps/flats, all first position notes)
(2) To develop understanding of basic rhythms (whole, half, quarter and eighth notes and rests)
(3) To be able to play and alternate 15 to 20 basic chords with simple strumming accompaniment patterns
(4) To be able to interpret written music and transform it into live music performance
Guitar 2A, 2B: Second year -- Objectives:
(1) To develop musical creativity through composition (melodies, chord-progressions, and/or songs)
(2) To develop ability to play confidently in large and small ensembles
(3) To study and perform one or more classical guitar solos (for UIL competition)
(4) To understand and apply concepts of music theory to the guitar fretboard
(5) To advance left and right hand technical skills (bar chords, slurs, arpeggios)
Guitar 3 and 4: Third and Fourth years -- Objectives:
(1) To study and perform one or more classical guitar solos (for UIL competition or for college auditions)
(2) To review and master all 2nd year concepts, plus take them to the next level (for example, more challenging ensemble parts, more intricate rhythms and techniques).
(3) To provide service to our local community by performing at various venues and events, free of charge.
