Palmetto Project, a statewide nonprofit founded in 1984, is the chief affiliate of
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library (DPIL) in South Carolina.
In Charleston County, Palmetto Project operates our DPIL program as BEGIN WITH BOOKS (BWB).
Dolly Parton founded DPIL in 1995 in honor of her father, who never learned to read.
She wanted to inspire a love of reading in children. Today, DPIL is a global book-gifting program that sends monthly books by mail to babies and toddlers up to five (5) years-old.
The DPIL model partners with nonprofit affiliates. The affiliates, like Palmetto Project, are responsible for raising the funds to pay for the books and postage for every child they enroll.
Passionate & priceless volunteers in Charleston County founded BEGIN WITH BOOKS (BWB) in 2010 to ensure children and families could enjoy the benefits of family storytime. Palmetto Project is the nonprofit affiliate of DPIL in Charleston County and operates as BWB locally.
Studies show that children who participate in the DPIL:
Enter school ready to learn.
Do better in school.
Have a better chance to become productive members of the community.
As we enter our 15th anniversary, we are serving over 6,100 babies and toddlers in Charleston County.
