Commentary
Jean’s wife was a dyker in Peebles. Contemporary with her is another Peebles dyker, David Campbell, who had these children with his wife Elizabeth Gourlay:
Margaret (baptized 1786 in Kirkmabeck)
William (baptized 1787 in Kirkmabeck)
Adam (baptized 1791 in Wigtown)
David (born about 1794 in Wigtown)
Margaret (baptized 1797 in Peebles)
Jean (baptized 1799 in Peebles)
Elizabeth (baptized 1802 in Peebles)
James (baptized 1805 in Peebles)
John (baptized 1807 in Peebles)
I have not tracked down David and Elizabeth’s marriage, but Elizabeth was probably born in 1760 in Anwoth, Kirkcudbrightshire. The occupation of dyker shared by David and Jane’s husband Thomas makes it seem likely that David was Jane’s brother. There were few other Campbells in Peebles at the time. Another, Alexander Campbell, sailor, married to Christine Ker, who had a child baptized in Peebles in 1802, may have been another sibling.
An additional piece of evidence suggesting that David and Jane were probably related is that Jane’s husband Thomas was an Irish immigrant who would likely have entered Scotland through Kirkcudbrightshire or Wigtownshire.
David was buried in Peebles in 1813 and his wife Elizabeth in 1831.
