The Bedouins today live essentially in the same style in which lived the prophets Moses, Jesus Christ and Mohammed. They originated in the Arabian Peninsula and moved through the desert from one place to another in order to find food for their flock of goats and sheep. Although the Bedouins go through a process of modernization, most still live a simple life, often in tents made of goat hair. (The word “Bedouin” means "desert" or “beginning”, since they live “in the desert as in the beginning”.)
Passing on tradition: The Bedouins continue their harsh life style also today. Both men and women are used to hand-labor.The men work outside the home and many of them still take care of the flock. The women stay at home, make food and take care of the children. The women also make games, tents, and cloths. Doing so, they created beautiful art. This craft-work was passed on from mother to daughter for thousands of years.
Modern hardships: The Bedouins have travelled around as nomads throughout the ages, but because of national borders are now limited in their movement. Today most of the Bedouins live in the Middle East, many in Israel and in the Palestinian Authority. The Bedouins around Jerusalem, who are mostly from the Jahalin tribe, suffer as a consequence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the separation wall in specific. These Bedouins live in tough conditions and are considered the most impoverished population in the Palestinian Authority.
