Boomilever

The objective of this event is to design and build the most efficient Boomilever

meeting the requirements specified in these rules. A Boomilever is a cantilevered

wood and adhesive structure, mounted to a vertical Testing Wall, carrying a load at a

distance from the Wall.

Can’t Judge a Powder

The intent of this event is for students to make and record

observations. Students will test and characterize one pure substance and then,

based only on data they collect, answer a series of quesitons about that substance.

Students WILL NOT be asked to identify the solid. Emphasis of this event is on the

quality of data collected, answering questions about the substance and providing

data to support their answers.

Crime Busters

Seaway Area Career and Tech Center Criminal Justice Class

Given a scenario, a collection of evidence, and possible suspects, students will

perform a series of tests. The test results along with other evidence will be used to

solve a crime.

Disease Detectives

- Students will use their investigative skills in the scientific study

Meteorology

This event emphasizes the use of process skills within designated meteorological

topics. Skills to be addressed and evaluated may include generating inferences,

making predictions, problem solving, observing, formulating and evaluating

hopotheses, and analyzing and interpreting data.

Metric Mastery

Students will estimate and then measure properties of identified objects including

mass, area, volume, density, force, distance, time, and temperature. Teams will also

perform metric unit conversions..

Road Scholar

Teams will answer interpretive questions that may use one or more state highway

maps, USGS topographic maps, Internet-generated maps, a road atlas or

Rotor Egg Drop

A team will construct an unpowered, autorotation helicopter device, which uses one

or more helicopter rotor(s) to safely transport a raw chicken egg from a specified

height to the floor.

Sounds of Music (TENTATIVE)

Prior to the competition each team must build two instruments, of any kind, based

on a 12 tone tempered scale, prepare to describe the principles behind their

operation and be able to perform a major scale, a required melody and a chosen

melody with each.

Wheeled Vehicle

- Competitors must design, build, and test one vehicle that uses a

non-metallic, elastic material as its sole means of propulsion to travel a distance as

quickly and accurately as possible.

One student will write a description of an object and how to build it, and then the

other student will attempt to construction the object from this description.

Meeting Schedule:

We will be having a 2:30 - 5:00 meeting approximately once per month.
Team members will be assigned events as soon as possible.
Team members will need to study or complete their tasks mainly on their own. We will help with ideas as needed and students can use whatever materials are available at school, but additional materials will be difficult to get due to our tight budget.
Students are welcome to work with Mr. Roesch during the school day or in the 2:30 - 3:30 time block as long as they arrange this in advance with Mr. Roesch.

Transportation:

Team members will have to find their own transportation home from the monthly meetings, or stay only until 3:30 and ride the bus home.
As a cost saving measure, on competition day, students will need to find transportation for themselves and their equipment. This can come in the form of parents or car-pooling with other team members.
Mr. Roesch and Mr. Bashaw will meet the team in Potsdam for the competition.
