School Improvement Plan
Evaluation period: September 2013 – June 2014
Plan issue date: 1-9-2014
Summary school improvement plan
1. Introduction
1.1 The focus of the evaluation
As part of our ongoing work in the school, we conducted a school self-evaluation of teaching and learning this year. We evaluated Science. For more information on how the evaluation took place, please see our School Self-Evaluation Report which is also available on our website under School Improvement Plans.
This school improvement plan sets out the actions that we will undertake in the school over the next three years in Science. The main purpose of these actions is to improve our pupils’ learning.
2. Summary of school self-evaluation findings
2.1 Our school has strengths in the following areas:
Strengths
o 98% of our students enjoy their Science lessons
o Teachers also, are enthusiastic about teaching Science.
o Teachers are willing to implement change and engage in CPD.
o 86% of our parents agree that their children enjoy Science lessons.
o We have ample resources for the teaching of Science.
We know this because we consulted with pupils, parents & teachers and examined other information in the school.
2.2 Our school has decided to prioritise the following areas of development:
Areas for development
o Explicit teaching of Science on a weekly/fortnightly basis, incorporating at least 50% practical lessons.
o CPD for teachers.
o Parental involvement and knowledge of the curriculum
We have decided to prioritise these areas because the evidence gathered shows us that children enjoy Science and we aim to increase time spent on the subject, focus more on active learning, improve the quality of our teaching and engage parents in their child’s learning.
2.3 Our school has set the following targets for improvement which are related to pupils’ achievement and has identified the following actions which will help in achieving those targets over the next three years.
Target for Improvement
Action
o Place link to the Science Curriculum on the school website
o Involve parents both in the classroom and in project work at home, culminating in a Mini Science Exhibition in June 2016.
o To increase parental interest & involvement in the Science curriculum
o To upskill staff in knowledge of Science experiments
o To provide further opportunities for children to investigate and explore scientific concepts and communicate their knowledge of same
o To actively engage in CPD
o To use outside agencies to enhance teaching of Science
o Each teacher will commit to explicitly teaching Science on a weekly/fortnightly basis incorporating at least 50% practical lessons.
As a parent you can help us by familiarising yourself with the Science curriculum, talking to your child about their Science lessons, assisting in the school when needed, sharing your Scientific expertise with the school, working on Science projects with your child at home.
2.4 We know we will have achieved our targets when at least 50% of our Science lessons are practical, parents have become more involved and children can talk about & display their learning in Science.
