Course material

These are notes which I wrote up for my courses in SEAS at Columbia.  (Updated Jan 2017.)

MSAE4206, Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Solids

last offered Fall 2016, new content added Fall 2016. (pdf) (HTML)

This course is required for seniors, first-year MS and Ph.D. students in MSE.  The course content is roughly half on electricity and magnetism (level of Griffiths) and half on solid state (level of Ibach/Luth) with some focus on applications / device materials.

MSAE4215, Mechanical Properties of Materials

updated Jan 2017, last offered Spr 2017 (pdf)  (HTML)

This course is required for seniors, first-year MS and Ph.D. students in MSE.  Course notes are mostly complete except for a missing chapter on fatigue.  Primary source for 1/3 of the material is Nye's excellent text.  Not my specialty, but fun to teach.

MSAE/AP6091, Magnetism and Magnetic Materials

last offered Fall 2010  (pdf)

Graduate elective course on magnetism.  These notes are fairly incomplete -- only about 1/2 written.  If I give the course again, I'll write some more.

MSAE/AP3111, Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Kinetic Theory

last offered Fall 2011

These were my experiments with Beamer lectures.  In my midterm evaluations, the students asked me to stop with the Beamer, so I did, and #10ff were written on the board instead.  This presentation follows Kittel and Kroemer's text.

(1a), (1b) perpetual motion machines and the meaning of never

(2) entropy of a binary system

(3) concept of temperature and the three laws

(4) the boltzmann factor

(5) helmholtz free energy, entropic pressure

(6) partition function; ideal gas: pressure, energy, entropy

(7+8) planck distribution; heat capacity, blackbody radiation

(9) open systems; chemical potential and diffusive equilibrium

EN1102, The Art of Engineering (Link to project page.)

Part of a first-year course taken by all SEAS undergraduates.  I designed and usually teach the APAM project, design of electric guitar strings.  (Prof. Andrew Cole led the project in 2014 and is leading it in 2017.  )
