From Skyscanner: "Massive congrats to Ben Norman who took home the inaugural Skyscanner Accessibility and Inclusion Award with The University of Edinburgh. Ben's winning entry was a game called 'Calm and Collect' built as part of his undergraduate project and dissertation. 'Calm and Collect' is aimed at children with autism and helping guide them through coping mechanisms through day-to-day situations that might cause anxiety."
Ben was my UG4 supervisee in 2023 - 2024 and my student in the Human-Computer Interaction course, during the same year. His dissertation, entitled "Toward a Technology to Overcome Anxiety in Children with Autism" explored how a technology-based game can be developed to present a novel and engaging solution to assist children with autism in managing anxietyb in difficult daily situations. He designed and developed a tablet game app to simulate challenging situations and present strategies for staying calm. The participatory approach of Informant Design was used to involve stakeholders, and experts in HCI, Autism and Education, to help design the game. Empirical data gathered from the summative evaluation suggested that the game was fun, engaging and easy to use, and had the potential to support children with autism in overcoming anxiety in challenging daily situations.Â
