The handbook to the left was the current handbook when Troop 401 formed as Troop 1 of Auburn in 1923. Second Edition, third cover variant, olive green background, 1921-27

Troop 401 started in Auburn, Washington, as Troop 1 of Auburn in 1923. The Scoutmaster was Harlan R. Stone. The numbering system at that time was that of the English system whereas the first unit of the town was number 1. This is still continued in England and Canada.

    • March 1925, the Methodist Episcopal Church was the sponsor with Rev Harlan R. Stone as Scoutmaster. Later that year, the unit was sponsored by a group of Citizens in Auburn under the Seattle Area Council. Cecil M. Ward took over as Scoutmaster. Walter W. Downing was the Committee Chairman.

    • In December 1926, the troop was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club in Auburn with Ralph N Smith as the president of the club. J W Milton was the Scoutmaster and Ulmont V.Robinson as the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1927, Ulmont V. Robinson took over as Scoutmaster. The Troop was now numbered as 401. This probably started the district renumbering with all troops in the district now numbered as 400 series. .

    • In 1928, H. G. Philips was now the Scoutmaster. This year, the Auburn Club of Kiwanis was cosponsor with the American Legion.

    • In 1929, Franklin A. McLean, a 28 year old took over as Scoutmaster. Stanley W. Brown was now the Committee Chairman. Registration was fifty Cents per year.

    • 1930 was still the same with Franklin A. McLean as Scoutmaster. Records show his business phone number as 6 and home number as 204W, the first shown in Troop records.

    • 1931 has Franklin A. McLean as Scoutmaster with Dr.H.G. Storey as Committee Chairman until 1936. An unknown male took over as Chairman for one year. Then George Rutherford was the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1937, G .M. Hall was Scoutmaster with Charles Ludwik as Committee Chairman,

    • 1938 brought a new Scoutmaster Wilfred Hoban.

    • 1939 has Wilfred L. Hoban as Scoutmaster and R. Kuehn as Committee Chairman as was 1940.

    • In 1941, Wilfred Hoban was still Scoutmaster and no Committee Chairman was noted.

    • 1942 brought another Scoutmaster, Clifford Cavanaugh and again, no Chairman was noted.

    • In 1943, Clifford Cavanaugh was still the Scoutmaster with Charles Peckenpaugh as Committee Chairman.

    • In 1944, Clifford Cavanaugh was Scoutmaster and now Robert J. Taylor as the Committee Chairman.

    • 1945 brought Dallas Zollinger as the new Scoutmaster with Donald B. McGlenn as Committee Chairman.

    • 1946, Dallas Zollinger was Scoutmaster and Donald B. McGlenn as Committee Chairman.

    • In 1947, the first mention of districts was that the Troop was in the White River Valley District. Dallas Zollinger was Scoutmaster with R. E. Oberg now as Committee Chairman.

    • 1948 was a change with Lyle R. Schneider as Scoutmaster and Del B. Price now as Committee Chairman.

    • 1949 brought Lyle R. Schneider as Scoutmaster and now Howard O. Burke as Committee Chairman. This continued throughout 1950.

    • 1951 still had Lyle R. Schneider as Scoutmaster and the Committee Chairman was now Sam E. Julson.

    • 1952 was another change with Joseph P. Hebert as Scoutmaster and Clifford E. Davis as Committee Chairman.

    • No record for 1953 but the following year showed Joseph Hebert and Clifford Davis reregistered.

    • In 1954, Irving C. Worden was now the Scoutmaster and Clifford E. Davis still as Chairman.

    • In 1955, the Troop reregistered but the front cover had no adults listed.

    • In 1956, Irving C. Worden was still the Scoutmaster but the Committee Chairman was now Richard Dahloger. The new year brought the new Chief Seattle Council designation with the Green River District which comprised of units in Auburn, Kent and Renton.

    • In 1957, the new Scoutmaster was John J. Moore with Ken Fetters as Committee Chairman.

    • In 1958, William R. Crocker was the Scoutmaster along with Ken Fetters as Committee Chairman.

    • On the 1958 record, it now shows John 1. Moore as Scoutmaster with Herb Churchill as Committee Chairman.

    • In 1959, Walter Fitzgerald was now the Scoutmaster. Because of the Ditto process, most of the adult leadership could not be read.

    • In 1960, Jack L. Sprenger was the Scoutmaster and the Committee Chairman was E. Ross Farr.

    • No record is showing for 1961 but Jack L. Sprenger was Scoutmaster and E. Ross Farr was the Committee Chairman as they both reregistered in 1962

    • In 1962, V. Glenn Dallas was now the Scoutmaster and Jack L. Sprenger the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1963 the adult leadership changed with Howard Allman now the Scoutmaster and Martin o. Ensley the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1964, Howard Allman still Scoutmaster and Martin O. Ensley the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1965, the leadership changed again, with Martin O. Ensley now the Scoutmaster and Harvey I. Richards as the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1966, Martin o. Ensley was the Scoutmaster and Harvey I. Richard the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1967, Glen B. Warrick was the Scoutmaster and Ray J. Kettman the new Committee Chairman.

    • In 1968, David C. Hawkins took over as Scoutmaster and Ray 1. Kettman remained as Chairman.

    • In 1969, David C. Hawkins still was Scoutmaster and Kay W. White was now the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1970, C. Larry Brown was Scoutmaster, then LeRoy Eversole. Calvin Stahl was the new Committee Chairman.

    • In 1971, LeRoy Eversole as Scoutmaster and David L. Elder was Committee Chairman. In November, Sherrill Clark took over as Scoutmaster.

    • In 1972, Sherrill B. Clark was Scoutmaster and David L. Elder was Committee Chairman.

    • In 1973, Sherrill B. Clark was still Scoutmaster and Eugene M. Mason was the new Committee Chairman.

    • 1974 brought changes that David F. Hasbargen was Scoutmaster, followed by Walter E. Russell. Sherrill B. Clark was now the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1975, WaJter E. Russell was still the Scoutmaster with John R. Bittinger as Committee Chairman.

    • In 1976, Jack H. Roberts assumed the role as Scoutmaster with Gene E. Kraus as Committee Chairman.

    • In 1977, Arthur J. Hanley was now the Scoutmaster and Larry W. Poort the Committee Chairman.

    • 1978 shows Arthur J. Hanley as Scoutmaster and Larry W. Poort the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1979, in April, Sherrill B. Clark took over as Scoutmaster and Larry W. Poort the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1980, Sherrill B. Clark was Scoutmaster and Larry W. Poort the Committee Chairman.

    • In 1981, Sherrill B. Clark was Scoutmaster and John R. MacMaster Jr took over as Committee Chairman.

    • In 1982, Sherrill B. Clark was still Scoutmaster with John R. MacMaster as Committee Chairman.

    • In 1983, Sherrill B. Clark was still Scoutmaster with John R. MacMaster as Committee Chairman.

    • 1984 brings Sherrill B. Clark as Scoutmaster with John R. MacMaster as Committee Chairman.

    • In 1985, Sherrill B. Clark was Scoutmaster with Michael McDonald as Committee Chairman.

    • 1986 brings no changes with Sherrill B. Clark as Scoutmaster and Michael McDonald as Committee Chairman.

    • 1987 still the same with Sherrill B. Clark as Scoutmaster and Michael McDonald as Committee Chairman.

    • 1988 brought a new Scoutmaster, Charles Booth and new Committee Chairman, Merle R. Smith.

    • In 1989, the Scoutmaster was still Charles Booth and the Committee Chairman was Merle R. Smith

    • 1990 does not show any council records but the Scoutmaster Charles Booth and Committee Chairman Merle R. Smith were still going strong.

    • 1991 brought no changes as Charles Booth was Scoutmaster and Merle R. Smith was Committee Chairman.

    • 1992 has Charles Booth as Scoutmaster but Donald A. Spellman was now the Committee Chairman.

    • 1993 Charles Booth was still Scoutmaster but James Nannery was the new Committee Chairman.

    • 1994, Charles Booth was Scoutmaster and James Nannery was the Committee Chairman.

    • 1995, Charles Booth was Scoutmaster and Curtis Jensen was the Committee Chairman.

    • 1996, Michael Eeds was the new Scoutmaster and Curtis Jensen was the Committee Chairman.

    • 1997 was the year that changed the physical limits of the district, whereas the area of Auburn, Maple Valley and Covington were consolidated into the Foothills District. Kent and Renton remained in the Green River District. Michael Eeds was the Scoutmaster and Clinton W. Shaw was the Committee Chairman.

    • 1998 brought Steven Scott Myrick as Scoutmaster and Clinton W. Shaw remained as Committee Chairman.

    • 1999, Steven Scott Myrick was Scoutmaster and Clinton W. Shaw was Committee Chairman.

    • 2000, Clinton W. Shaw was the new Scoutmaster and Joseph G. Ferong was the new Committee Chairman.

    • 2001, Clinton W. Shaw was the Scoutmaster. Steven Scott Myrick was the new Committee Chairman until August when Landon M. Gibson III took over.

    • 2002, Clinton W. Shaw was the Scoutmaster and the new Committee Chairman was Landon M Gibson III.

    • 2003 brought a new Scoutmaster, Jeffery W. Stanford with Landon M. Gibson as Committee Chairman.

    • 2004, Jeffery W. Stanford as Scoutmaster but Michael B. Irwin now as Committee Chairman.

    • 2005, Jeffery W. Stanford as Scoutmaster, Michael B.Irwin as Committee Chairman. Later on, Michael B. Irwin started as Scoutmaster and Craig Koppleman took over as Committee Chairman.

    • 2006, Michael B Irwin was Scoutmaster and Craig Koppleman as Committee Chairman.

    • 2007, Charles Slightam took over as Scoutmaster and Craig Koppelman was the Committee Chairman.

    • 2008, Charles Slightam as Scoutmaster and Craig Koppelman was Committee Chairman.

    • 2009, Jeffery Gering took over as Scoutmaster and David E Bishop took over as Committee Chairman.

    • 2010, Jeffery Gering as Scoutmaster and David E Bishop as Committee Chairman.

    • 2011, Michael Peterson became Scoutmaster and David E Bishop as Committee Chairman.

    • 2013, John Wilson, Chris Cushing & Gordon Bair took over as Scoutmasters and Laura Whitlock as Committee Chair.

  • 2015, Terri Danz was elected to Committee Chair. (When a treasurer is elected, she will officially assume the role.)

  • 2017, Malcolm Liest, Mike Peterson & Rex Frank took over as Scoutmasters and Dave Hill as Committee Chair.

  • 2019, BSA started to accepted Girls in Troops and Nancy Peterson is the first Scoutmaster for the Girls. Malcolm Liest, Mike Peterson & Rex Frank as Scoutmasters for the Boys and Dave Hill as Committee Chair.
