Asutosh College, formerly known as South Suburban College, started its journey in the year 1916 under the visionary leadership of Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, popularly known as “the tiger of Bengal”. The dream of 1916 has already crossed 100 long years and stands like an unquestioned reality. Asutosh College was established to cater the need of the residents of South Calcutta for an institute of UG education. Its reputation, however, now attracts numerous students from other districts of the State as well as a significant number of students from other states and even neighbouring countries. Without compromising on its reputation as one of the foremost Kolkata colleges for imparting UG education in basic sciences and humanities, the college is fast gearing itself to meet the changing demands on education. Asutosh College is marching ahead with its sole objective of providing quality education to all.

The Department of Statistics, Asutosh College came into existence in 1952. The main goal of the Department is to impart quality education and to disseminate statistical knowledge which enables the students to pursue their career choices in academics or in analytics industry. The Department has a well-equipped computer lab where the students get the opportunity and space to connect theoretical knowledge with practical learning. There is a good collection of books in the Department with latest titles in various areas of statistics. The Department has earned for itself an excellent reputation and the students excelled in the University Examinations many a time. Many of the former students are now recognized statisticians in the world. Over the years the Department has continued to maintain a distinctive competence.
