The Department of Statistics at Asutosh College was established in 1952, making it one of the earliest undergraduate statistics departments in West Bengal. Since its inception, the department has upheld a tradition of academic excellence keeping pace with modern applications and computational tools. The mission of the department is to impart high-quality education and equip students with the analytical and quantitative skills required in a wide range of professional fields. With a growing reliance on data across sectors such as business, health, economics, public policy, and technology, the department ensures that students are well-prepared to meet these emerging demands.
A key strength of the department lies in its dedicated and experienced faculty members who are deeply committed to student learning and mentoring. Teaching is enriched through lectures, hands-on sessions, project work, and interactive discussions. In addition to classroom learning, students are encouraged to take part in various co-curricular activities, including seminars, workshops, and experiential learning activities.
Over the decades, the department has built a reputation for producing meritorious students who have consistently performed well in university examinations. One of the proud achievements of the department is the consistent success of its students in competitive national-level examinations. Many have qualified prestigious entrance tests such as the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) entrance examinations, IIT JAM, and other all India-level postgraduate entrance examinations, securing positions in premier institutions for higher studies.
The alumni network of the department is strong and widespread, with graduates excelling in academia, research organizations, government agencies, and private industries both in India and abroad. Many are now well-regarded statisticians, data scientists, and educators contributing significantly to their respective fields. The department continues to evolve with the times, maintaining its distinctive competence and commitment to excellence in statistical education.

The library houses an impressive collection of approximately 1,200 titles covering a wide range of topics in statistics. The collection includes both foundational texts and advanced reference books by renowned authors. Students regularly access the Seminar Library making it an integral part of their academic journey. The library is continually updated with new editions and recent publications to keep pace with the evolving landscape of statistical education.
Laboratory Facility
The Department of Statistics is proud to maintain a well-equipped Computer Laboratory, which plays a crucial role in integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The lab is dedicated to Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the pioneer of statistics in India.
The laboratory houses 31 desktop computers, 1 laptop, 1 projector, and 2 printer-cum-scanner units, all connected through a Local Area Network (LAN). The systems are installed with essential statistical software and other tools used for data analysis, computation, and visualization. With regular maintenance and updates, the laboratory remains a dynamic space for learning and hands-on training in statistical computing and programming.
A degree in Statistics opens up a wide range of academic and professional opportunities in today's data-driven world. As industries, governments, and research institutions increasingly rely on data to inform decisions, the demand for trained statisticians and data analysts continues to grow rapidly.
