GASTROLOGY FROM SCRATCH
I'm trying to keep this thread for gastrology, by which I mean something different from "astrology".
Maybe you will see that.
Here is Gastrology from Scratch, a short introductory series of lessons.
There are 3 things in your natal map which show YOU, your nature, substance, being:
Moon, Mercury, Sun. NOT ascendant. The ascendant is not a thing. It is nothing, nothing to the power 7.
(I will shortly write a page especially on the Ascendant).
The outer planets, esp. Pluto, Neptune and Saturn, show the nature of the EXTERNAL influences on your
being which can inspire and transform and activate that being, can bestow talent and genius.
There are 2 accents in my astrology: the nature of your genius, and the nature of your needs which need
to be fulfilled by some other person or people.
The biggest need that any person has is for the presence of the three QUALITIES; Cardinal, Fixed and
Mutable. We must look at M/M/S (Moon/Mercury/Sun) only to supply these qualities. If you do not have say
the Cardinal quality, then your biggest need from other people is the Cardinal quality, which of course
must be in their M/M/S.
* * *
NEXT, AFTER THE 3 QUALITIES, WHIICH ARE OF 1ST IMPORTANCE, COME THE 4 ELEMENTS, WHICH ARE OF THE SECOND
IMPORTANCE :
The M/M/S trio are each of an ELEMENT. The 4 elements nourish (transfer energy to) one another, thus :
Earth nourishes Water, Water nourishes Air, Air nourishes Fire, Fire nourishes Earth. Nourishment
affects happiness (lightness), it also affects strength (vigour and energy).
The MOON needs to nourish. This gives it happiness and lightness. BEING nourished makes it unhappy and
miserable. (Blavatsky says the moon is the cause of all suffering. In truth, it is the creator of all
your happiness and unhappiness.)
MERCURY and SUN seek to BE nourished. That makes them strong: this is where you derive your strength
from.
* * *
IF TWO PEOPLE HAVE ALL 4 ELEMENTS (IN M/M/S) then all elements are nourished and nourish.
There is then an unbroken energy flow (circular) so there is no point of stagnation. This is a good
state of affairs.
But 2 people can also do well without all 4 elements, in fact each one can do well on his/her own. If
the MOON element nourishes the SUN/MERC element/s then there is moon happiness and Sun/Merc strength.
Let's clear up one or two things. As the Sun and Mercury are interchangeable terms (See Alice Bailey,
the foremost authority on astrology), in effect you have 2 suns in your horoscope.
* * *
NEXT PRINCIPLE : CONTIGUITY OF M/M/S
Ideally, these entities (M/M/S) should form an unbroken sequence or sequences. Eg if your M/M/S occupy
Taurus, Leo, Virgo: ideally you want someone to fll the gaps between Taurus and Leo: i.e. someone with
Gemini and Cancer. And their third thing would extend the Taurus-Virgo sequence to Aries or Libra. The
point of such sequences is that they are all in connected stages of evolution, and automatically fill
the missing qualities and elements.

GURTH'S RESEARCHES
My "Research into the Exciting World of Astrology" was published as a series of 6 articles in the Cape
Town-based magazine Odyssey.
Starting in the OCT/NOV 1983 issue. They were introduced by the founding editress as follows :
Gurth Stanford Bruins, Gold Medallist for B. Sc. Engineering at the University of Cape Town,
abandoned his career in engineering several years ago in order to widen the field of his studies,
particularly in those subjects which have a strong human interest, including molecular biology, bio-
chemistry and psychology. For the past three years he has been researching Astrology and the results of
his work todate present a statistical challenge to the orthodox scientific world, and it is for us an
honour that this meticulously objective scientist has given Odyssey first publication rights.
COMMENT:
.
I had come across Michel Gauquelin's Spheres of Destiny, the first work I had seen that tackled the task
of proving some of the truths of astrology statistically. A thoughtful study of Gauquelin's work helped
me to place the subject of Houses and Angles (Ascendant, Mid-heaven, Descendant, Nadir) in its proper
perspective. That motivated me to do some research on other areas of astrology.
.
My conclusions were that the most powerful determinant in a horoscope is EXACT ASPECTS BETWEEN PLANETS
(something which is quite irrespective of whether we are using Sidereal or Tropical Astrology). Such
exact aspects I termed RESONANCE. This is the main concern in the astrology of genius.
.
After another 25 years of research, those conclusions stand unmodified. But my understanding has
naturally spread into other areas of astrology. My studies have confirmed the powerful influence of
transits, but show no evidence to support the theory of progressions. To be blunt, I regard the basic
idea of progressions as nonsense without any verifyable validity. The idea of an empty Ascendant is
also, in my understanding, a ridiculous misconception.
.
What Gauquelin showed is that there are certain points where the planets exert an enhanced influence.
The strongest points being the Ascendant and Midheaven, and the areas extending from them into the 12th
and 9th houses. Of lesser strength, the descendant and nadir, with their areas extending into the 6th
and 3rd houses. He found no qualitative difference between these areas, and a little thought will serve
to debunk more than half of the dogmas relating to houses.
.
In a nutshell, influences in astrology can only be exerted by the planets. If a planet happens to be on
the Ascendant, it is really strong. But if there is nothing on the ascendant, then there is nothing to
exert any influence, and the ascendant becomes totally unimportant, meaningless in fact. Unoccupied
signs can also exert no influence. By which I mean a sign with no planet in it.
.
The NODES OF THE MOON are a different matter. These are not planets, it is true, but they relate
directly to a specific planet, the Moon. Which I regard as the most important of all planets.
(Astrologers often use the term planet rather loosely, to include Sun and Moon, just because there is no
really good term for "Sun and Moon plus planets". Of such terms I prefer "placement" but unfortunately
this also includes non-material and non-existent items)

THE ASTROLOGY OF GENIUS
The inner planets, Moon/Mercury/Sun, represent YOU; the outer planets are forces external to you which
may confer (or show) genius in you IF they resonate with an inner planet. I'll explain resonate in a
moment.
So, depending on which outer planet is resonating, you may be a Plutonian genius (as already described
briefly), or a Saturnian genius, or a Neptunian genius. These are the most frequent (standard) types.
Uranus, Jupiter and Mars geniuses are rare.
To determine resonance, look at the angle between the outer and the inner planet. Some common resonant
angles are Conjunction (0), Opposition (180), Trine (120), Square (90), Sextile (60), and also ANY ANGLE
=( 360 divided by a whole number (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9....up to 180!)).
To be a genius of the first rank, the actual angle must be within one degree of the theoretical resonant
angle. Of the second rank, from 1 to 2 degrees from the theoretical. Anything wider than that: forget
about it, its effect is negligible. (This is one place where orthodox astrology errs badly, in
considering wider discrepancies).
For example, you would be a Plutonian genius if the angle between your Sun and Pluto is 58.9 (1.1 from
60, we won't quibble about 1.1 being more than 1.0).
You would be a Neptunian genius if the angle between your Sun and Neptune is 119.0 (1.0 from 120).
___________________________________
Outer-planet resonance is defined as resonance between two outer planets, which include Pluto, Neptune,
Uranus, Saturn, and the North Node only for the purposes of outer-planet resonance.
The only set of geniuses I found who relied on outer-planet resonance without having resonance to inner
planets, were the "20 top chess players in history". They nearly all had this outer-planet resonance,
and lacked the normal linkage to inner planets.
Remarkable, it must say something about chess-players, but what?

ABOUT RN (RED NUMBERS)
INTRO :
Red Numbers refer to the physical biorhythmic cycle of 23 days.
Each RN is the day of an arbitrary month system starting on 1 Mar 1900, where each month has 23 days.
Thus, any two people with the same RN are born an exact number of 23-day months apart, which puts their
physical cycles exactly in phase.
If the two cycles are exactly in phase, the compatibility is 100%.
To calculate the % compatibility between 2 people, first subtract their RN's, the smaller from the
larger, getting a number called the DIFF. (If this DIFF is greater than 11, subtract it from 23 to get
the true DIFF.) Next, multiply the DIFF by 9 and subtract the answer from 100 to get the PERCENTAGE
COMPATIBILITY.
Example 1: RN's 19 and 8 ------ DIFF=11 --------------DIFF X 9 = 99------------------ 100 - 99 = 1%
COMPATIBLE.
Example 2: RN's 19 and 2------DIFF=17------greater than 11, so true DIFF=23-17=6--------- DIFF X 9 = 54
------- 100-54= 46% COMPATIBLE.
SOME FAMOUS COUPLES:
These cases are taken from my article "The Biorhythms of Love" by Gurth Stanford Bruins, which appeared
in the OCT/NOV 1983 issue of the Cape-Town based magazine Odyssey.
Margot Fonteyn : 3
Rudolph Nureyev : 4
Prince Albert : 4
Queen Victoria: 2
Robert Browning : 12
Elizabeth Barrett: 12
Elizabeth Taylor : 2
Richard Burton : 2
Princess Margaret : 22
Peter Townsend : 21

NOTE:
If you want to know the Red Numbers of your friends, start a personal thread for yourself on the
Members' Personal Files page, and post a message on it, giving names and dates of birth. State whether
this data may be added to the RN lists, or whether you want to confine it to your personal thread.

LEADING AND RULING
I am becoming more aware of the distinction between ruling and leading.
The Lower House of Parliament, is the house which leads, which intiates ideas and directions, puts them
forwards for consideration, but it is the Upper House, or Senate, which decides whether to accept or
reject, and which therefore rules, although it does not lead.
This Ruling is typical of Fixed Signs: the motto of Leo is "I rule", the motto of Aquarius is "I serve"
( and the I Ching points out that to rule truly is to serve), Taurus is renowned for its dictators
(Hitler, Saddam Hussein etc), and Scorpio, well its rule is usually more internal, and does not lend
itself to Being ruled.
To be a Hitler or a Napoleon requires leading as well as ruling : they both have Capricorn (Cardinal,
leading) Moon, and they both have Fixed Suns.
Jay, as you lack Cardinal, you may not be so strong in taking initiatives... with my Cardinal Mercury,
that is more my responsibility, as we see in our Owned! game, but there also I do not expect you to bow
down to my suggestions, between us you are always unquestionably the ruler and the decider, with your
Triple Fixed to my Nothing Fixed.

THE 12 SIGNS
In these notes on the signs, instead of exhaustive descriptions (see other astrologers for these), I am
giving only a few lesser-known keywords, and instead giving famous examples whose lives you can study to
get some idea of the potentialities of each sign.
-----------
Aries:
Aries is the astrological New Year. The old year can now be buried and forgotten, if so desired. Your
life can start afresh with a Big Bang. Set your direction, then launch your rocket. Ignite all your
burners. The momentum you build up during this month may carry you right through the year.
Aries is to do with the development of the Will, and Will Power.
It is unrivalled for sense of humour. Here is an example, from the birth chart of Joseph Haydn , who had Sun and Mercury in Aries, fed by Moon in Gemini: a very happy state of affairs: from Wikipedia I quote: "By 1749, Haydn had matured physically to the point that he was no longer able to sing high choral parts. Empress Maria Theresa herself complained to Reutter about his singing, calling it "crowing".[13] One day, Haydn carried out a prank, snipping off the pigtail of a fellow chorister." Such a prank is typical of Aries's wicked sense of humour. Can one imagine Beethoven or Mozart doing such a thing?
Famous Aries people : Bismarck, Rachmaninoff are all that I can think of. (Added 19 Sep 2021: JS Bach, Joseph Haydn)
-------------
Taurus:
To this sign belongs most the THIRD EYE.
Notable Sun Signs in Taurus:
Shakespeare, Bertrand Russell, Krishnamurti, Brahms, Tshaikovsky, Faure, Prokofiev, Braque, Rossetti,
Renoir, Miro, Dali, Freud, Liberace,
Mercury Signs:
Wagner, Faure, Prokofiev, Rossetti, Dali, Freud,
Moon Signs:
Saint-Saens, Rossetti, Jung, Borg,
---------------
Gemini:
Here we find the greatest range of stages in the journey of reconciling head and heart. The highest type
of Gemini manifests divine wisdom (sophia).
--------------------
Cancer:
Cancer is complicated and contradictory.
Famous Cancer people :
Hemingway, Mandela
-------------
Leo:
Known as organisers, Leo people can also be most creative in the arts.
My favourite Leos are the blazingly brilliant writers:
Shelley, Shaw, Rupert Brooke, Galsworthy, Aldous Huxley
--------------------------------
Virgo:
Analytical, maternal, the most sensitive of the signs.
Good for writers:
DH Lawrence, JB Priestley, HG Wells, Arthur Koestler, Tolstoy
Note added 26 Sep 2012:
The keyword for Virgo, "I analyse", has been in my mind lately. And right now, reading Tolstoy's book 'Boyhood', I come across this sentence:
>>However, in my own case I may have been deceived by my excessive capacity for, and love of, analysis.<<
So I looked up his natal chart. Moon, Mercury and Sun ALL in Virgo!!!
----------------------
Libra:
Harmony.
Many leaders, who nearly always favour a loving approach. These people are the most laid back in the
world.
Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, Lee Iacocca, Michael Edwardes, Danie Craven, Ernie Els
-----------------------
Scorpio:
The Battleground.
Here the final battles in the development of the self have to be fought and won, before one can go on to
the next sign Sagittarius, where the first real fruits come about.
Famous Scorpio people :
Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Indira Gandhi, Gary Player
-----------------
Sagittarius:
Sagittarius is a source of the greatest genius, not so much as a Sun or Mercury sign, but as a Moon
sign.
This was very clear to me after doing my researches on 410 of the greatest genii. What puzzled me was
that none of the well-known astrologers seemed to be aware of this. It was only several years later, in
1986, that I read Aleister Crowley's Book of Thoth.
It was very clear that Crowley was aware of the special qualities of Moon in Sagittarius.
Famous people with moon in Sagittarius :
Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Einstein, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Utrillo, Henry Moore (?), Alexander
Fleming,
--------------
Capricorn:
The sign of success. Here are to be found completely dominant figures like Muhammad Ali and Michael
Schumacher. Good for politicians, e.g. Adenauer and tricky Dick Nixon.
To this sign belongs structure: Matisse. And control. Also hard work and ambition.
---------------
Aquarius:
One of the 2 most musical signs, together with Sagittarius.
After the culminating success of Capricorn, the Aquarian concentrates on giving service.
Some great Aquarians:
Lincoln & Darwin (both born on the same date!), Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Stendhal, John McEnroe
(he of the mighty service)
----------------
Pisces:
The ultimate sign. Dissolution : Gorbachev dissolved communism, de Klerk dissolved apartheid.... both in
that key year 1990.
Other great Pisceans:
Einstein, Lawrence Durrell, Gogol (Mercury), Schubert (Moon)
