Celebration at the Coventry Transport on 15 March 2014: Thrust SSC receives Landmark status!
The ASME UK&IRL Section organises a ceremony designating ThrustSSC, a supersonic car, as an ASME History & Heritage Landmark on 15 March 2014. In 1997, ThrustSSC set a Land Speed Record of 763 mph or Mach 1.02 on the Blackrock Desert Dry Lake in Nevada, U.S.A. Today, this is still the world record speed.
The ceremony begins at 10.00am at the Coventry Transport Museum, Coventry, CV1 1JD, United Kingdom. One will be have the opportunity to view the car, visit the Landspeed gallery and take a ride on a simulator that gives a sense of the driver's experience during a supersonic run. Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC 2012)
Venue: Ecole Centrale de Nantes, France
Date: July 3-5, 2012
Following the success of this year’s Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) at Loughborough University, District H's Student District Operating Board (SDOB) is working with ESDA and Ecole Centrale de Nantes to organise the next SPDC, to be held July 3rd-5th 2012 in Nantes, France. The conference will be held in conjunction with parts of ESDA 2012, and will allow student members from across the District to come together and participate in a variety of competitions, network with senior ASME members and attend professional development sessions.
The 2011 SPDC saw students from the UK, Germany and Turkey compete in the Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition and the Student Design Competition. The winners of each competition went on to compete in the world finals at ASME's IMECE in Denver, Colorado over the weekend November 12-13th 2011. Sirko Bartholomay, the winner of the District H Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition, placed third at the finals in Denver and won a $1000 prize.

The Second ASME/IFToMM International Conference on Reconfigurable Mechanisms and Robots
Venue: Tianjin University, China
Date: July 8-11, 2012
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 28 November 2012
Adaptability and reconfigurability in mechanism design and robots development are the challenges that the kinematicians and roboticians must meet in this new century due to the increasing production demand of small batch, short run, and quick changeover and due to worsening environments and climate, and space exploration. This can be tranced back to 1990s when researchers were generating new ideas and concepts for new machines and reconfigurable robots. This resulted in kinemetatropic linkages, metamorphic mechanisms, and machines with various topology, etc. The new mechanisms have a property of generating different topological configurations for reconfigurability and for various task requirements.
