PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SCIENCE

LTC Kevin Salge


The Professor of Military Science (PMS) is the program’s senior officer and is responsible for the supervision and welfare of assigned Cadre and enrolled and contracted Cadets. The PMS synchronizes and integrates the program’s military science curriculum, recruiting and retention activities, scholarship and incentive processes and sustainment capabilities to meet the program’s assigned mission within the brigade commander’s intent.

BIOGRAPHY

Following attendance at the Infantry Officer Basic Course, LTC Salge was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division in Ft. Drum, New York where he served as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Scout Platoon Leader, and Headquarters and Headquarters Company Executive Officer. During this assignment he deployed to Egypt in support of Multi-National Forces and Observers-Sinai. Prior to the Maneuver Captains Career Course, LTC Salge commanded a company in 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment training new Infantry Soldiers at Fort Benning, Georgia.

After attendance at the Maneuver Captains Career Course, LTC Salge was assigned to 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (SBCT) in Fort Lewis, Washington as an Assistant Operations Officer. In April 2006 he assumed command of Alpha Company in 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment. LTC Salge deployed his company to Iraq, conducting operations in Baghdad and Baqubah over a fifteen-month period.

After command, LTC Salge served as an Observer/Controller Trainer in 1st Battalion, 307th Infantry Regiment in Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania working with the Pennsylvania National Guard. During this assignment he was selected as the aide-de-camp to the Commanding General for 1st Army Division East in Fort Meade, Maryland. Following this assignment, LTC Salge attended the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was then assigned to the 172nd Infantry Brigade in Grafenwoehr, Germany where he served as the Battalion Operations Officer in 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment. He deployed with the battalion to Afghanistan, coordinating operations in Nangarhar and Ghazi provinces. Upon redeployment, LTC Salge served as the Brigade Executive Officer and coordinated the inactivation of the 172nd Infantry Brigade.

Following this assignment, LTC Salge was assigned to United States Pacific Command in Camp Smith, Hawaii where he served as the Future Operations Counter Terrorism Planner in the Operations Directorate. In November 2016, LTC Salge was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas where he served as the Deputy G3.

Prior to selection as the Professor of Military Science at the University of Iowa, LTC Salge served as the battalion commander for 2nd Battalion 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas from 2017-2019. During his command, the battalion deployed to Europe in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve where they trained alongside numerous NATO allies and partners.

LTC Salge holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science from University of Iowa, and a Master of Arts in Executive Leadership from Liberty University. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, the Basic Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge.



ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SCIENCE (XO)

BIOGRAPHY

Major (MAJ) Joshua Luckey was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Aviation branch in 2000, following graduation from the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program. After completion of Flight School and the UH-60A Advanced Qualification Course at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, First Lieutenant Luckey was assigned to 1-52nd Aviation Regiment, 17th Aviation Brigade, at Camp K-16 in the Republic of Korea (02-03), and served as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company Executive Officer and Fuel/Ammo Platoon Leader.

In 2003, First Lieutenant Luckey was assigned to 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 3rd Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah, GA, where he served as Assistant Battalion Logistics Officer (S4). Soon after, he was assigned to Division Headquarters-Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, serving as the Division’s Assistant G3 Aviation Officer and immediately deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III (05-06) where he managed airspace and personnel movement operations. After redeployment, Captain Luckey attended the Aviation Captain’s Career Course, Aviation Maintenance Managers Course, and Aviation Maintenance Leaders Course (06-07) at Ft. Rucker, Alabama.

Upon completion of the career and maintenance courses, Captain Luckey remained at Ft. Rucker, where he was assigned to 110th Aviation Brigade [manages all Army Flight Training] and served as Brigade Logistics Officer (S4). In 2008 he assumed Command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 110th Aviation Brigade. In 2010, Major Luckey was assigned to a Stability Transition Team (STT) attached to 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, at Ft. Carson, Colorado, and deployed to Contingency Operating Base (COB) Basrah, Iraq, where he mentored four Iraqi Department of Border Enforcement Generals in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn (10-11).

Upon re-deployment, Major Luckey attended Command and General Staff College/Intermediate Level Education, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas (11-12). After graduating he was assigned as the 3rd U.S. Army Central (USARCENT) Operations Officer in Charge of the G3-Current Operations Integration Cell at Shaw Air force Base, South Carolina, and deployed in support of CENTCOM operations in Jordan and Kuwait (12-14). In 2014, Major Luckey was assigned to 2nd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, at Camp K-16 in the Republic of Korea, and served as Battalion Operations Officer (S3). In 2015, he was reassigned to 4th Airfield Operations Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment, at Camp Humphreys in the Republic of Korea, where he served as Battalion Executive Officer.

In 2016, Major Luckey was assigned to the U.S. Army Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) – National Capital Region, in Arlington, Virginia, and served as a Personnel Management Officer/Adjudicator. Since 2018, Major Luckey has served as the Assistant Professor of Military Science responsible for instructing all first-year Cadets at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa. Awards and decorations earned by Major Luckey include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Army Aviator Badge.

Major Luckey holds a Baccalaureate of Science Degree in Computer Science from Carson-Newman College (now a University), Jefferson City, TN, and a Master of Science in Management (Army Operations and National Security) degree from the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). Major Luckey is married to the former Ms. Colleen White, of Knoxville, TN. They have six children: daughters Catelyn (14), Sydney (12), Tiffany (3), and sons Zachary (11), Alexander (7) and Jacob (1).

BIOGRAPHY

A native to San Pedro, California, Captain Manuel Ruelas, received an Associates of Science Degree from El Camino College, majoring in Administration of Justice and obtained a Bachelors Degrees in Behavioral Science and Sociology from San Jose State University.

CPT Ruelas’ military career began in March 1991 as an enlisted Infantryman in the United States Army. During his first assignment he served as a rifleman in the 502nd Infantry at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and completed the Air Assault School, where he learned how to sling load and rappel out of various rotored aircraft. In July 1993 he transitioned out of the army and into the Civilian world. In March 2011, CPT Ruelas’ military career resumed as a commissioned officer in the Signal Corps. Upon completion of Signal BOLC, he reported to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he served as a JNN Platoon Leader with Charlie Company 4BSTB, deployed with HHC 1/506, as the S6 Advisor on a Security Force Assist Advise Team (SFAAT) that was embedded with the Afghan Uniformed Police (based out of their Provincial Head Quarters) and Afghan National Army (based out of their Operations Coordination Center Provincial) in Paktiya Province. He then got re-missioned to Advise a Military Intelligence Kandak (201st Corps) in Langham Province. He came back to Fort Campbell to help encase the 4BCT Colors and got transferred to work as the Assistant S3 with the 96th Aviation Support Battalion, 101 CAB. He worked as the BN S6 for 6-101 General Support Aviation Battalion, 101 CAB, and as the FA53 at the Brigade S6 Shop, 101 CAB. Upon completion of the Signal Captain’s Career Course in July 2016, CPT Ruelas reported to the 516th Signal Brigade at Fort Shafter, Hawaii where he served as a Battle Captain for the NETOPS Section of the 4th Regional Cyber Center – Pacific, took command of the United States Army Network Enterprise Center – Schofield Barracks, and transferred to 18th MEDCOM, where he served as the Network Officer of their G6 Section. In July 2020 he reported to the University of Iowa where he currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Military Science.

His military education includes the Air Assault School, Signal Officer’s Basic Course, OPSEC Officer Course, Contracting Officer’s Representative Course, Anti-Terrorrism Officer Course, the Signal Officer’s Advanced Course the Company Commander and First Sergeant Pre-Command Course, and the Common Faculty Development-Instructor Course.

His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Superior Unit Award, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with Campaign Star, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, and the Air Assault Badge.

CPT Ruelas is married to the former Victoria Caroline Brucker of San Pedro, California and has two sons, Pablo and Samuel, and one daughter, Paulina.


SENIOR MILITARY SCIENCE INSTRUCTOR

MSG Christopher Janis


The Senior Military Science Instructor (SMSI) (includes Chief Military Science Instructor positions for SMCs) is the program’s senior enlisted soldier and advisor to the PMS. Additionally, the SMSI is assigned a Cadre role for Cadet Summer Training, and also supports the program’s staff lead for on-campus recruiting, retention, Cadet administrative and logistical tasks.

BIOGRAPHY

Master Sergeant (MSG) Christopher Janis is from Margate, FL. He joined the Army in April 2003 where he attended Infantryman OSUT at Fort Benning, GA, and graduated in August. He was assigned to Alpha Company, 3-502IN, 2nd BCT, 101st ABN DIV, Fort Campbell, KY. He immediately deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) until February 2004. While at Fort Campbell, MSG Janis served with 3-502IN, 1/75 RSTA, 1-75 CAV, and 1-502 IN.

He deployed to OIF 05-06 in SW Baghdad, OIF 07-09 in North Baghdad, Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) 10-11 in RC South, Zhari District. After redeploying from OEF 10-11, MSG Janis was transferred to Fort Polk, LA, in July 2011, where he served as the Task Force 2 Senior Scout OC, Operations Group, at the Joint Readiness Training Center. In June 2014 he transferred to Fort Drum, NY, where he was assigned to Anvil Company 2-22IN, and 1 BCT HQ Operations, for the 10th MTN DIV.

He served as a Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, and Brigade Operations NCO, he deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) 15-16, as a PSG with Anvil Company. In May 2019, MSG Janis reported to University of Iowa ROTC, where he is currently serving as the Senior Military Science Instructor.

MSG Janis has served as a Rifleman, Machine Gun Assistant Gunner, M240B Machine Gunner, Radio Telephone Operator, Scout, Senior Scout Observer, Assistant Recon Team Leader, Recon Team Leader, Squad Leader, Senior Scout OC, Rifle Platoon Sergeant, Rifle Company First Sergeant, Brigade Operations NCO, and currently SMSI

MSG Janis is married to his wife Deann Janis, April 2005, and they have three children, Christian , Campbell , Alivia, and one fur child Buck.

SFC Villarreal has been assigned to Fort Hood, TX, Fort Campbell, KY, Fort Benning, GA, Fort Carson, CO, and Fort Polk, LA. He has deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), once in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), and once in support of Operation Spartan Shield (OSS). He is currently serving as a Military Science instructor (MSI) at University of Iowa.

SFC Villarreal has served as a Carrier Driver, Mortar Gunner, Mortar Squad Leader, FDC Check Computer, Company Mortar Section Leader, Drill Sergeant, Senior Drill Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, Company First Sergeant, Senior Mortar OC/T, BN Live Fire Mortar OC/T, and MSI.

BIOGRAPHY

Staff Sergeant (SSG) Formosa Poe was born in Sumpter, South Carolina; Shaw Air Force Base. She was raised in a Military family where both of her parents have served as Computer Engineers in the United States Air Force. Her father and mother were major influencers for her to join the United States Military. She had chosen the United States Army to put forth a rigorous mental and physical challenge to her lifestyle. She has a brother, Sean, who is an IT professional in North Carolina.

SSG Poe joined the Army in November of 2011 to Bravo Company 2nd Battalion 39TH Infantry Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training for the Military Occupational Specialty of Human Resources at Charlie Company 369 Adjutant Battalion both in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Upon completion of Airborne certification at Fort Benning, Georgia, SSG Poe was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion for XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina for 3.5 years. In January of 2016, she completed a 12 month tour with the G1, 2D Infantry Division at Camp Red Cloud, Uijeonbu, Korea. In January of 2017, SSG Poe relocated to HHC Brigade, 54TH Brigade Engineer Battalion, 173rd IBCT (Airborne), Vicenza, Italy where she was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. She then was reassigned to the University of Iowa Army ROTC program May of 2019 to serve as a MSI in Iowa City, Iowa with her two kittens Cherish and Love.

SSG Poe served as a Human Resource Specialist for Battalion S1 and an Executive Assistant for the Mission Support Element Director of XVIII Airborne Corps. A G1 Division Level Non Commissioned Officer in Charge for Awards and Actions for 5 Brigades within the southern region of Korea. During her tour in Uijeonbu, Korea, she earned her Master Fitness Trainer certification which qualifies her to physically train any elite US Soldier to their fullest potential and a Human Resources Floor Sergeant.

SSG Poe attended Hawaii Pacific University, Honolulu, HI where she earned her minor in Psychology. She attended Colorado State University of Pueblo, where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science, Health Promotion and Recreation.


RECRUITING OPERATIONS OFFICER

LTC-Retired Tony Wolf


The Recruiting Operations Officer (ROO) is the program’s senior civilian. As directed by the PMS, the ROO synchronizes and integrates the program’s marketing, outreach, recruiting, retention, incentives and scholarship processes and activities in order to enroll and contract Cadets to enable the program’s mission.

BIOGRAPHY

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Retired Tony Wolf was born and raised in Packwood, IA. He attended The University of Iowa from 1982-87; graduating with a Bachelor of General Studies Degree in December 1987. While at the University, he enrolled in the Army ROTC Program and enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard in December 1982. He completed Basic Combat Training and Combat Engineer Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard, MO in the summer of 1983. In May of 1985 he commissioned as a Combat Engineer officer with the Iowa Army National Guard. And during the fall of 1985 he completed his Officer Basic Course at Fort Belvoir, VA. Following the Officer Basic Course, LTC Ret. Wolf continued to serve in the Iowa Army National Guard.

In January 1991, He began working as a Police Officer for the Marion Police Department. He retired in July 2005 to pursue interests in the Army ROTC Program at The University of Iowa. While serving in the Iowa Army National Guard LTC Ret. Wolf served as a Platoon Leader, Headquarters and Headquarters Company Commander and Battalion S-1 in the 224th Engineer Battalion. While serving with the 224th, LTC Ret. Wolf deployed to Vilsek, Germany for a six month tour.

In 1998, he transitioned to work as the Assistant S2 of the 67th Troop Command. Additionally, he worked as the Assistant S1 and S1 actual from 1999-2005. In 2005, LTC Ret. Wolf transitioned to serve as the S3 Operations Officer for the 671st Troop Command where he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in January of 2005. He retired from the Iowa Army National Guard on July 31st, 2012 after 29 years of service. LTC Wolf is married to Ann who is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner who works in the Women’s Health Clinic at the VA Hospital in Iowa City. They have proudly raised two sons Erik and Garrett and one daughter Paige.


UNIVERSITY SECRETARY

Mrs. Sharyl Grim


The University Secretary under general supervision, performs secretarial work such as composing routine correspondence, maintaining records, and obtaining and providing factual information requiring a knowledge of the policies and procedures of both the assigned and related work areas. Duties involve the use of personal computers, computer terminals, and a variety of software and/or conventional office equipment. May provide functional supervision.

BIOGRAPHY

Mrs. Sharyl Grim began working at the University of Iowa and Army ROTC in February of 1990 and is by far the longest standing member of the Hawkeye Battalion. She is beloved by all and is an incredibly hard working member of the team. She has been recognized for her efforts on multiple occasions. Of note she was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Support Award in 2002 from the Iowa Army National Guard and the Commanders Award for Public Service in 2006 from the U.S. Army Cadet Command.

Sharyl considers herself the ROTC “Mom”, helping Cadets in all aspects of life in preparing them to become successful Officers. She thoroughly enjoys having former Cadets and Alum return to campus as Cadre. In her spare time Sharyl enjoys spending time with family, camping, golfing, quilting and other needlework. She is Member of the Nichols Christian Church, Nichols Volunteer Fire & Rescue Auxiliary, Muscatine Melon Patchers Quilt Guild and Quilts of Valor Foundation and is married to Russ Grim for over 38 years and together they have two grown and married children, Meg (Brandon), and Jeff (Nikki) and two grandchildren, Collin and Elyse.

HUMAN RESOURCES ASSISTANT

Mr. Matthew Darnell


The Human Resources Assistant (HRA) (includes ILO Administrative NCO position for select programs) is the program’s primary personnel and administrative specialist for Cadet and Cadre actions. The HRA may support a portion of Cadet Summer Training (CST).

BIOGRAPHY

Mr. Darnell severed in the United States Marine Corps as a 0311 infantryman at Twentynine Palms, CA from 1996 – 2000. He is a graduate from Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, ND with a Bachelor’s Degree. He previously worked for the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA for thirteen years. Recently he started working for Cadet Command at the University of Iowa in October 2018. As a Veteran, he has a appreciation working and serving Veterans in the VA Medical Center, and now working for Cadet Command as a HRA while serving the ROTC program and Cadets’.
