Tips to Prepare for Academic Jobs

1. In order to be successful in academic jobs such as postdoc or faculty positions, highest priority should be given to scholarly publications in reputed journals.

2. Students should attend prestigious conferences to present the novelty of their research work. They usually arrange career workshops to meet potential employers and students should utilize this opportunities as well.

3. In case a student is lacking proficiency in English language or other technical skills, s/he should attend such sessions arranged on campus and during conferences.

4. Students should select cutting edge research topics for their dissertation that is in par with the need of potential employers. For example students should be able to demonstrate their ability to accomplish interdisciplinary research.

5. One way to be successful with interdisciplinary research to take courses outside their core discipline. For example the need of machine learning, artificial intelligence and data science skills are increasing rapidly. Students in other disciplines should take such courses to be more proficient.

6. Students should also take part in voluntary and leadership roles by serving student chapters on campus or off campus professional societies. But this should not be at the cost of compromising research or scholarly work.

7. Some universities are teaching focused and require extensive teaching loads. They prefer candidates to have prior industry experience to benefit student learning. In such cases, candidates should plan to join industry first and then move to academic jobs.

8. Students should prepare their portfolio long ahead of their graduation dates. Faculty job announcements are typically released one year prior to hiring.

9. For research focused universities, in addition to research experience, prior teaching experience is also solicited. Students should also look for teaching opportunities on campus.

10. For the application package, usually a cover letter, CV, teaching philosophy and interest, research statement and reference letters are solicited from the candidates. Students should plan accordingly to make their package competitive.
