Furness - Extracts from the Military Chronicle 18th & 19th Centuries

Furness or 'Furnace', this area has quite a military background, its lands rich in coal and iron ore and with easy access to the sea made it an ideal place for the manufacture of both cannons and shot. These products were shipped down to Portsmouth for the Royal Navy.

The following two chapters from 'A Furness Military Chronicle' by Alfred Fell, published in 1937 by Kitchen & Co., were recovered in photocopy form from the Regimental Muesum's paper archive during transfer to Lancashire Records Office, Preston.
