This summer I am offering an archaeology and art camp for 6 to 9 year olds.
This class will teach the basics tools and concepts of archaeology to young students as well as showing them concepts and examples of other cultures. They will learn about several cultures around the world by looking at and touching artifacts and artworks from those areas. Kids will also do several art projects inspired by these cultures. Some examples of cultures we will look at are the American Southwest, the Maya and ancient China. If your children have taken my camp before, we will have new projects and new things to dig for.
We will get messy! Projects include digging in the dirt, molding clay, grind corn and painting.
Every day we will dig and have at least one art project.

Class Abstract
In this class children are exposed to the basic tools and techniques archaeologists use in fieldwork. We talk about a different region of the world each week and learn about that culture through what archaeologists have discovered. Each class session includes artifacts, pictures, stories, tools and a project or craft. Examples of topics include ancient Egypt, the Inca of Peru, the Maya of Mexico and Guatemala, paleolithic cave paintings, the American Southwest, Northwest Coast and Californian prehistory. Examples of activities include screening for arrowheads, making casts of Mayan artifacts and making Egyptian amulet necklaces. The classes have been developed to cater to both new and returning students, and new activities and projects are used each session.
About the teacher, Cassandra Chattan
I am excited to offer an after school enrichment class about archaeology. I worked as an archaeologist in California for eighteen years. I have a Bachelors degree in anthropology and a Masters degree in history. I am also the mother of two young children. Over the years I have also volunteered to talk at many different schools and grade levels about archaeology. While my work in archaeology has been in Arizona and California, I have traveled extensively throughout the world to visit the archaeological sites that have fascinated me. This endeavor has taken me all through the United States, Central America, South America, Southeast Asia, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
My experience with hands on archaeology, visiting amazing archaeological sites, and interacting with children has enabled me to understand which parts of archaeology and ancient cultures are exciting to children.
Classes are taught as part of the after school enrichment programs at several schools in Petaluma, California.
Classes have been offered at the following schools in Petaluma:
