I'm Assistant Professor in Computer Science and a member of the Interaction Lab (video about what we do here) at Heriot-Watt University.

I'm a computational linguist with a focus on studying the intricate processes involved in everyday conversation and building better computational models of it. I'm also interested in the use of such models in creating more intelligent & naturally interactive dialogue systems (aka. conversational systems, conversational agents, chatbots).

I did my PhD on processes whereby people reach mutual understanding in multi-party (>2 people) conversation. Later I started working on Dynamic Syntax - a computational grammar-based model of how people produce and understand language incrementally, word-by-word. I have applied this model, in combination with machine learning techniques to build more intelligent and more natural conversational systems including systems that can learn language from interaction with a human partner.
