Cracking the SAT: Chemistry Subject Test

The verdict: The purchase of this book is highly recommended. Material and concepts are presented in a clear format that will not overwhelm you. There is an adequate amount of practice exams and questions; consider supplementing with Barron's for even more practice exercises.

+

This book is not too bulky and has an easy-to-read format. Each chapter includes a detailed summary that can be used as a crash course for that chapter. Each chapter also includes around 8 practice questions that cover all three question formats on the Chemistry SAT.

-

Its 3 practice exams are a bit on the easy side.

Barron's SAT Chemistry

The verdict: Buy this book for its 5 practice tests and wealth of practice questions in each chapter. Keep in mind that this book will overprepare you for the test; if you only want a quick review of concepts, consider Cracking the SAT instead.

+

This book includes 4 practice tests, more than other books on the market, plus another diagnostic test. Some of the test questions are taken directly from actual SAT questions from released exams or the Collegeboard website. It includes an especially detailed section on laboratory procedures. Each chapter ends with a light summary of definitions and formulas to know. Each chapter also includes 10-15 practice questions, which is more than what Cracking the SAT has.

-

The book is bulky and includes too much information. Then again, it doesn't hurt to be overprepared. Practice exams are slightly too difficult.

Kaplan SAT Chemistry

The verdict: The purchase of this book is not necessary when there are better books on the market, such as Barron's or Cracking the SAT. The gross amount of typos may frustrate and confuse students.

+

Has 4 practice tests total, including one diagnostic.

-

The book is loaded with typos, especially in the answer keys to the practice tests. Do not use this book for actually learning the material; use it as a refresher with caution. Material is not presented in as clear a manner as other books, such as Cracking the SAT.
