Evolution of the adaptive sex-linked color polymorphism rejects the co-evolutionary character of Müllerian mimicry

Abstract

Mullerian mimicry are presented since Mueller (1879) as an example of coevolution of a common aposematic pattern by two or more unprofitable preys. We studied a phylogeny of Dilophotes net-winged beetles (Lycidae) in Sumatra and reconstructed their dispersal history. The results show that advergence to local patterns is the predominant mechanism of evolution of warning patterns in Dilophotes and then evolution of warning patterns of these unprofitable beetles resemble in principal aspects the model of Batesian, not Muellerian mimicry. As a consequence, polymorphism is widespread among these Muellerian mimics. Additionally, evolutionary constrains are predicted by phylogenetically structured presence of bi-colored forms and by the observed unique sexually linked polymorphism. The Dilophotes males and females follow different models which resemble more closely their body sizes, but the sexes differ in perfectness of resemblance. Besides polymorphism in Muellerian mimics the origin of new mimetic patterns is discussed in observed multi-pattern environment.
