Welcome to my E-Learning Portfolio. As an educational consultant and a designer who primarily works for educational organizations, the materials I create are often proprietary and cannot be shared in full. Thus, I have taken some time to place some excerpts and examples in an online portfolio.
Design of online instruction requires strict attention to the needs and cognitive capacity of the learner. Instructional designers cannot simply "dump" information into a course and expect it to be effective for the learner. Instead, designers should follow sound instructional pedagogy and e-learning design principles that engage learners, while avoiding overload of cognitive resources which could lead to inefficient processing and reduce knowledge acquisition and appropriation. In addition, we must begin with the end in mind, creating courses grounded in backwards design principles that use the course outcomes as a guide for development of activities and assessment. Most importantly, instructional design is not "my product," but rather instructional design is how I help someone else create the highest quality product they can. I listen carefully to the subject Matter Expert and to their ideas and dreams for their course. Then, I work to make those ideas and dreams a reality.
As a designer I often refer to the multi-media design principles presented in Clark and Mayer's E-Learning and The Science of Instruction. and the curriculum design framework in Understanding by Design, by McTighe and Wiggins. For those not familiar with these resources, you may choose to refer to the article "Six Principles of Effective E-Learning" which briefly explains Clark and Meyer's six principles, and . the Understanding by Design Guide which briefly explains the benefits and stages of backwards design. I invite you to see all of these principles in action as you explore my portfolio using the navigation buttons above.
Everything I create meets WCAG compatibility. Pictures have Alt Text, transcripts or closed captions are available for videos, and PDFs can be read by screen reading software. In addition, I guide Subject Matter Experts to create material that addresses a diverse population and strives to create inclusive communities of learning. You can find UDL principles implemented in all of my course design work.
