Thoughts for Applications
Table of Contents
Here are some notes that might give you ideas on how to apply for grants. These are suggestions, not requirements or guidelienes: you should feel free to submit a creative and out-of-the-box application if you have some good ideas and wish to propose them for funding. Nothing reasonable is excluded a-priori.
Andy Nowak used to run tournaments and other activities on a shoe-string budget, and we will respect proposals that demonstrate that kind of approach.
Here are some examples of uses for funds to advance scholastic chess.
1 Chess club costs
Whether it's a club in a school and you are a teacher or parent or coach, or a club that meets in a teen center or library or other space, you could request funds to:
1.1 get equipment for the club
Examples of equipment that really help a club are: (a) chess sets (unweighted pieces with simplest bag - more elaborate gear can get damaged) - half as many as you have students, (b) a lecture board, such as this one: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00LBGBNGC (c) clocks.
1.2 travel to a tournament
Simple gas reimbursement to get a student carpool to a tournament. If the club is playing at a very high level they might need funds to stay overnight for a state championship.
1.3 morale funds
(a) Annual club party (though this is often best done as a potluck), (b) T-shirts, …
2 Training
(a) Occasionally reimburse a coach (gas or train money) to come from another town and host a class or workshop, (b) get specific training for students about to participate in a high-level tournament.
Although the selection committee will consider all applications, we are generally opposed to coaches requesting money for themselves. A school or club can request a grant to pay a coach, and we recommend that the coach be payed appropriately for their level.
3 Tournament organization costs
Venue, prizes, …
4 Scholarships
(a) A student who has performed very well and needs funds to travel to tournaments outside her area, (b) students from poor families who need some kind of help participating.
