The first Andrew schools were conducted before Iowa became a state and when the town of Andrew was only four years old.
The first students attended a log cabin school on Main Street which was also a court room. This was just west of the present Andrew Cafe and Bank. In the Winter of 1841-1842 there was a subscription school with the cost of $2.25 per quarter of thirteen weeks. An early student was Wales Butterworth.
The second school was a public school taught by Isaac P. Garretson in a frame school building erected by the citizens on Block No. 31, corner of Washington and Van Buren Streets, near the present Andrew Bus Barn.
