4 Summary statement

I have been working for many years on developing software programs that are, in some sense, intelligent and autonomous. During this time, I have been doing research in Artificial Intelligence related areas like Soft Computing, Fuzzy Logic, Natural Language Processing, Knowledge Representation systems, Agent Oriented Programming, Expert Systems, etc. I am interested in developing computer systems able to automatically learn to recognize complex patterns and make intelligent decisions based on information.

I graduated from Havana University, Cuba with a degree in Mathematics. After graduation I pursued research in the area of Computer Simulation and Modelling, becoming proficient in abstract modelling.

Later, in the second half of the 80’s, I turned my attention to Object-Oriented and Logic Programming, and developed an object oriented extension of Prolog and several expert system applications about scientific applications like parameter estimation and differential equations resolution.

During the 90’s, I collaborated with professors Dr. H. D. Burkhard and K. Bothe at Humboldt University, Berlin in the area of Agent Oriented Programming for several years. During this period, I used the previously mentioned Prolog shell.

From 2004, I began to investigate ontologies, languages and other things related to the Semantic Web. Then, from 2006 to 2008, I made my PhD thesis about “Fuzzy Approach to Conceptual Meaning Processing in Natural Language Documents” at Universidad de Castilla La Mancha (UCLM), Spain, supervised by Professor Dr. J. A. Olivas. Graded unanimously Excellent Cum Laude.

Since then I have been participating in the development of different tools based on a semantic approach for Information Retrieval and Question Answering systems. Those tools use ontologies like WordNet, YAGO, Concept Net and thesaurus like EUROVOC. Actually, my research interests are related with developing new soft computing models based on concepts and meanings for Web Information Retrieval, using Generalized Constraints and Protoforms as well as ontologies, thesauri and other knowledge representation structures like conceptual graphs. I am mainly interested in extracting structured information from documents in natural languages and to employ it to deduce new pieces of information by deduction.

I have been a Computer Science professor at various universities for several years, coordinating research groups receiving grants from different organizations. I have received several grants from different institutions like Humboldt University and Castilla La Mancha University, German DAAD organization, Mexican PROMEP, etc. I have been invited by several institutions such as Berlin School of Economics, and Law, Berlin, Germany, Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica, Electrónica, Puebla, México, Bayreuth University, Bayreuth, Germany, etc.

I have presented several papers at international conferences like FUZZ IEEE, EUSFLAT, ISDA, etc. participating also in the organization of conferences like ESTYLF 2006 and others. I have articles published by journals like Soft Computing, Mathware & Soft Computing and Springer Verlag series.

I have demonstrated ability in several different programming languages like Prolog, MATLAB, C/C++, Pascal, Fortran 90/95. I am very much systematic and responsible, as well as a tenacious and serious worker.
