ALZEY
House book - family history and town development
As a branch of social history, researching the settlement of a town is an interesting task.
From the time until the end of the 18th century, when Alzey was an electoral Palatine town, no complete registers of the house population are available. In the treatise "Die Flurnamen der Gemarkung Alzey", written by Heinrich Becker, according to sources available in the town archives, one can also find references to houses and their inhabitants. In addition, from the 18th century there are preserved sales contracts, receipts, and other protocols.
In 1797 the Electoral Palatinate administration ended and Alzey became a cantonal town in the Donnersberg department. A directory from 1798 records the inhabitants and the "place of residence according to the street".
A land tax directory from 1801 contains in Section A No.1 the "interior of the municipality of Alzey" with 523 positions within the then still completely existing city wall ring. The owners are noted with their names and occupations. From the same year 1801 there is a list for the collection of the door and window tax.
From the aforementioned documents (and others) from the period 1801 to 1971, an extensive file was created, in which the history of the approximately 1000 Alzey dwellings existing at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century is documented. This file will be able to be used for family and local history purposes via the homepage of the Altertumsverein für Alzey und Umgebung e.V. after an appropriate data technical setup.
