First Generation

1. Thomas SASSER , died after 1821 in Screven Co., Georgia. He was born in North Carolina. Thomas Sasser is thought to be the progenitor of the Sassers in Georgia and Florida. He was born in North Carolina or Georgia about 1760. The name "Sasser" applies to a location meaning "dweller at or near a willow tree or a lock in a river." He settled in Burke County, Georgia about 1790, and possibly lived in the part that became Screven County in 1793. He married Clarisy, maiden name unknown, before 1794. She was born about 1770 in Georgia. Most of their lives were spent in Screven County. All their 12 children were born in Georgia. Thomas Sasser owned a great deal of farmland, over 3,000 acres...

Thomas SASSER and Clarisy were married. Thomas SASSER and Clarisy had the following children:

From "Of One Dozen Sassers" compiled and edited by Claudi Chitwood Weller p. 27

Since the Will-Deed of Thomas Sasser Sr. of Screven County, Georgia will be used to prove the parentage of the "One Dozen Sassers", it will e used as the first reference on Bryant Sasser...In this document, his father bequeathed to him, 90 acres of land and identified it as land that had been surveyed for Brittan Sasser and adjoining land already owned by said Bryant Sasser. We had already found this land grant and was aware that Brittan Sasser has been in Screven County as well as Burke County at the same time as Thomas Sasser, Sr.

Also, Bryant Sasser had been granted land in Appling County through the 1820 Land Lottery. So we are to establish with this that Bryant Sasser had been of the age of majority in 1820 and 1821.

We know that two oldest girls, Mary and Elizabeth Sasser were married before 1821 and along with Bryant, were not included in the list of children to share in the proceeds of holding that had been left to this widow, Clarisy, should she die or remarry. So it is with this that we determine that he was the oldest son and probably married and settled in his own home.

Like so many of the one dozen Sassers, he too left Screven County after the death of his father, and is found in Lowndes County, Georgia in 1830 and 1840. It is unknown whether or not he ever lived in Decatur County, but he did buy Lot #199 in District 19 from his brother, William Sasser.

By 1850 Bryant Sasser's wife had died and he had moved to Hamilton County, Florida, and was living with his son. Actually it was only a short moved as the counties border each other.

Bryant SASSER were married. Bryant SASSER had the following children:

    • +14 i. John SASSER (born in 1818).
    • 15 ii. Sarah SASSER.

3. Elizabeth SASSER.
