Geography is inherently a wedge issue. Off-census, election-year gerrymandering of congressional districts has crossed well over into the territory of election fraud.
It comes as no surprise. International borders have been fought over tirelessly. It goes to reason that a divided domestic electorate would encourage bothsidesism by news organizations that they can exploit for higher ratings and, it follows, short-term corporate profits. The temptation to fiddle with these borders appears to be low-hanging fruit to the power-hungry and pecuniary-motivated amongst us.
Countless casualties and deaths over various disputes persist over these largely human constructs going back since before recorded time in the same way violence exists in the animal kingdom. Warmongering is evident through the nature and acts of man (Hobbes, 1651). We are divided by lines in the sand as well as the physical and logistical constraints presented by bodies of water.
In the Cold War era, the Berlin Wall was perhaps the most egregious example of a border dispute. With its no man’s land of razor wire and armed guards instructed to shoot at anyone attempting to cross the border between then east and west Germany, there’s no question that the stakes between nations or factions thereof are a high-stakes endeavor. But just before the Berlin Wall was built, the single largest mass casualty event known to modern humanity took place. World War II, begun by the nazi invasion of Poland and the annexation of the territories essentially known now as the Czech Republic, was responsible for more deaths than World War I or the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today, as international trade wars are launched at a staggering pace from the American administration increasingly pursuing an isolationist posture, the issue of maps is becoming more prominent in discussions. These conversations increasingly expose the corruption of the trump regime.
There is a tendency to see the geographic world as you did when you were learning it. Only last week, the Equal Earth map was adopted by the United Nations. It replaced the Mercator Map, which skewed the map in telltale ways. It skewed the map because the majority of landmass is in the Northern Hemisphere and a bunch of other ways that made Greenland a prized target for the shithead-in-chief. he simply cannot wrap his fat head around the fact that the Mercator Map displayed the territory of Denmark in a way that exaggerated Greenland’s landmass vis-à-vis its proximity to the north pole.
The Equal Earth map was universally adopted by every nation in the UN. The only ‘no’ vote came from, you guessed it, the United States, which, to no surprise, has been under attack from within by the current administration’s agency problems. These include blatant insider trading, cryptocurrency scams, propaganda in various targeted disinformation campaigns, destruction of federal buildings under the guise of renovation, trade wars, war-wars, colonial expansionist tendencies and the insurrection of January 6, 2021.
The Equal Earth map displays the African continent in it’s true proportions. It likewise diminishes North America appreciably from its skewed representation on the Mercator Map. It comes as no surprise that the inherently racist administration found that the Equal Earth maps mathematical precision was worthy of an objection. The administration’s well-documented tendency toward reliance on falsehoods to win political favor with both an uneducated electorate and members of the republican party.
Ultranationalist tendencies are one of the defining features of fascism. Although, in practice, the ‘America first’ posturing turns out to have been thin-skinned pretext to start armed conflicts like the current war with Iran. kompromat led the administration to favor russia over Ukraine in the war putin started by choice. Bravado and puffery intimidate by bluffing, emanating from a bargaining position of weakness, designed to intimidate foreign adversaries and allies alike.
As such, we see the administration doing its best to rename the Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario and New Mexico. It goes to reason that, given an opportunity, it would rename the Milky Way the American Way.
While renaming bodies of water seem relatively innocuous on its face when faced with the endless crimes of the administration, the reality is that water is historically perhaps the most fought over geographic natural resource. Fresh water is needed to sustain life itself, and trade routes over waterways enable international shipping.
Water divides states and countries. These bodies also serve as natural barriers that enable trade, but as a public good, oceans are ripe for abuse by bad actors in the forms of overfishing, deepwater drilling, pollution, and naval conflict. The natural resources at stake are warming at an unprecedented pace. Cooking the oceans will melt the polar icecaps, putting former coastal regions underwater and inviting catastrophic death and disorder. As more water is diverted for the purpose of artificial intelligence facilitated by data centers, we see that the next chapter of natural resource allocation and, in this case, misallocation is being written in real time.
The shared resources of the oceans enable countries to exploit offshore drilling and an overwhelming dependence on outdated (by definition) fossil fuels. Oceans serve as the wild west of the administration’s many nefarious airstrikes on innocent civilians who, by and large, are in the wrong place and time. The wrong ‘leadership’ on Pennsylvania Avenue embodies the problem. While maritime law experts may seem few and far between these days, I assume there is no shortage of experts on war crimes at The Hague.
