Hi I’m Al a hobby farmer, park ranger, and of course coop builder. As a child I was inspired by agriculture and convinced to bring the community closer. When I was growing up my family raised meat poultry and a garden full of fresh produce every summer. I thought it was interesting to see the full agricultural circle, livestock eating feed grown from the manure the animals produced resulting in a food product. The skills and experiences gained from this have helped me become the person I am today.
When I was 12 years old I had finally convinced my family to allow me to raise a flock of laying hens. The day Poco, Caraline, and Martha (our three chicks) arrived my craving for agriculture only grew. Currently, I enjoy producing maple syrup, honey, eggs, pasture poultry, and fresh produce for the community. As my family and I looked for a chicken coop we couldn't find anything practical or of high quality to house our new family members. We also didn’t want to settle for a commercially produced coop with endless negative quality reviews. I came up with the idea to build my first custom coop for my three chickens. With the chilly Wisconsin winters I knew the importance of keeping my ladies warm and decreasing moisture in the coop. This was achieved through insulating the coop and creating winter ventilation.
Since the day our hens laid their first egg I have not eaten a commercially produced egg. The freshness, humane animal treatment, and health benefits are just a few reasons why. After building my coop and giving away a few eggs it didn't take long before I received requests from friends and the community that they wanted high quality coops and eggs. This inspired me to strengthen my building skills and continue building coops and other wood products for the local community. In 2020 Al’s Custom Chicken Chicken Coops LLC was formed. I appreciate the endless support from the local FFA organization, the community, along with family and friends who have continued to help me achieve my dreams!
