The Creatures

Deborah Harkness creates a world with three types of otherworldly creatures: witches, vampires, and daemons. Though ancient prejudices run deep, they come to learn that each race may have more in common than anyone knew.*

"Aunt Sarah had always told me that magic was a gift. If it was, it had strings attached that bound me to all the Bishop witches who had come before me." ~A Discovery of Witches, Chapter 1

While the witches and wizards of today are weaker, these magical creatures can cast spells, work elemental magic, and sometimes have unique abilities like timewalking. Some of the witches in the story include: Diana Bishop, Sarah Bishop, Emily Mather, Goody Alsop, Peter Knox, and Elizabeth Jackson.

"And there are vampires, ancient and beautiful, who feed on blood and will charm you utterly if they don’t kill you first." ~A Discovery of Witches, Chapter 2

Deborah Harkness creates vampires with an animalistic, even wolfish nature that create pack-like families. Some of the vampires in the story include: Matthew Clairmont, Miriam Shephard, Benjamin Fox, Ysabeau de Clermont, Philippe de Clermont, Fernando Gonçalves and Gallowglass de Clermont.

"There are also daemons—creative, artistic creatures who walk a tightrope between madness and genius. 'Rock stars and serial killers' was how my aunt described these strange, perplexing beings." ~A Discovery of Witches, Chapter 2

Daemons are mysterious creatures in the All Souls Trilogy because they can be born of human parents. Some of the daemons in the story include: Hamish Osborne, Christopher Marlowe, Sophie Norman, and Nathaniel Wilson.

“The world was a different place when there were as many creatures as humans.... But their sensitive immune systems are going to get humans in the end.” ~A Discovery of Witches, Chapter 13

While mostly unaware of the supernatural world around us, some of the humans in the story include: molecular biologist Chris Roberts, art historian Phoebe Taylor, Queen Elizabeth I, English aristocrat Walter Raleigh, and the alchemist John Dee. Also, I'd like to give an honourable mention to Hamish's lovely and accepting human parents even though we never directly meet them.

*While I'm generally playing fast and loose with spoilers, these are the only supernatural races we'll be defining today.
