How to band trees for cankerworms

To properly band your trees, you're going to need 4 items:

Tanglefoot Tree Insect Barrier (for the last couple years, this has been unavailable in Charlotte- you'll need to order it from Amazon).
Paper or tree wrap. This is what you'll apply the insect barrier to.
Insulation. This prevents the canker worm moths from crawling under your barrier.
Tape or staples. This will hold the paper to the tree.

It's been difficult to get these items in Charlotte, over the last couple of years. Amazon is the best way to get them, so I've provided the links, above.

Step 1: Wrap your tree with the insulation.

You might need to use tape or staples to attach this to the tree before you proceed to the next step. Trust me. It's hard to keep this on the tree while applying the paper. You'll need enough insulation so it fills up spaces (cracks, bark, etc) and prevents insects from crawling under your wrap.

Step 2: Cover your insulation with the paper or tree wrap.

You'll only need one layer of paper, perhaps with a couple inches of overlap, at the end.

Step 3: Apply the insect barrier to the paper.

This is sticky stuff. Don't wear your best shirt. You might need latex or vinyl gloves. Remember, this is poison. You don't want this on you, your kids, or your pets.
