Today is the 26thanniversary of bus deregulation. More than a quarter of a century on, the deregulated bus market has matured, but remains a difficult environment in which to operate a successful business.

Today, more than ever, the success of commercial bus services depends on regular monitoring. With reductions in BSOG and Concessionary Travel reimbursement, increasing fuel costs, local authority contract cuts and increased compliance monitoring, the need for operators to fully understand the performance of their routes has never carried such importance.

Monitoring is one of the most important aspects of operating a bus route. High standards of service result in increased customer satisfaction and greater passenger numbers, leading to higher revenue and growth in the bus network.

Conversely, a bus route left unchecked can result in regular early or late running and a gradual deterioration in service, which leads to lost patronage and revenue and, potentially, remedial action by the Traffic Commissioner.

However, finding the time and staff resources for this important function is often difficult to achieve. Many operators are unable to justify the cost of full time inspectors.
