Agito’s Graham Foulkes recently created a S-Paramics model to investigate the operation of a proposed new interchange linking the Cork Northern Relief Road (CNRR) and the existing N20, just outside Blarney, on behalf of Cork County Council.
Initial work saw the use of the existing CNRR SATURN model modified to include the new proposal. The new interchange considered by Graham involved a new roundabout linking the two major roads, but with a direct link between their northern elements, and a parallel leg linking Cork and Blarney. The SATURN model was used to determine wider network reassignment and provide new traffic flows for the interchange.
Traffic flows were output from SATURN and input to a new S-Paramics model of the interchange. Initially the design showed major queueing at the roundabout, which could be solved with the installation of new traffic signals.
Overall, combining the two modelling approaches demonstrated the value of our co-ordinated methodology and allowed the clients to reconsider their design proposals without undue delay to the delivery programme.
