Committees and Volunteer Opportunities

What is the PTO?

The Parent Teacher Organization is a diverse group of parents, guardians, teachers and administrators dedicated to the well-being of students at our school. We support the school, the students, the teachers and school administration with our time, energy and financial assistance. Our goal is to support the creation of an environment where all of our children can reach their individual potential and have educational, enjoyable and memorable experiences at Afton Elementary School.

What Exactly Does the Afton PTO Do?

The Afton PTO starts the year with the New Parent Welcome Breakfast at the first PTO meeting in September and never slows down! We organize fun school activities such as the Back to School Block Party, Small and Tall Ball, Family Events like Skate Night, in addition to obtaining volunteers for the library.  We organize two book fairs each year. We assist the Phys Ed teacher with Field Day. The PTO keeps Afton parents updated throughout the school year via the Afton website. For a complete list of PTO events, activities and fundraisers please see the Committees & Volunteer Opportunities page .

Why Does the Afton PTO need me?

These days, our schools are asked to do more with less. Our help is needed more than ever to fill the gaps. The PTO needs your membership dues, your time and your talent to maintain our programs and help support the school. The PTO greatly appreciates any donations beyond the membership amount and/or volunteering your time and talents to our activities and fundraisers!

How Do I Get Involved? As easy as 1, 2, 3!

1. Attend PTO meetings - they are generally held on the second Wednesday of each month at 9:30 am in the cafeteria.

2. Make a $20 donation to the Afton PTO at the beginning of the school year (or whenever you register your child for school.

3. Join the PTO E-Board or volunteer for Committees. You can volunteer for a one-time event or ongoing events and activities.

What Else Should I Know About the Afton PTO?

The dues of $20 per family comprise a large portion of the income needed to run all of the various activities listed above. We ask that you get involved with the Afton PTO-whether it's attending meetings, or running a booth at an event. If every family gave at least two hours all year we could accomplish so much more. Without parent volunteers, the PTO can't help our school get all those nice "extras" for our students that are not funded by the school district. Without the PTO a certain portion of the Afton school experience would vanish.

Back to School Teachers Luncheon

The PTO organizes the annual back-to-school luncheon held for teachers just prior to the start of the new school year. A coordinator organizes the event, and prepares a sign-up for donations of food items, volunteers to help set up, assist during the event, and help with clean up.
