Welcome Letter 2011

Post date: Apr 16, 2012 1:16:10 PM

Dear AEI Student Chapter Presidents & Faculty Advisers,

As the new academic year gets in full swing, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back and provide some information on exciting opportunities, benefits, and new requirements for AEI Student Chapters in 2012.

OPPORTUNITIES & BENEFITS

The biggest opportunity to remind you about is the 2012 Architectural Engineering Institute National Student Conference which will be held April 19th - 21st in Omaha, Nebraska.   Planned events include touring the new T.D. Ameritrade Park Omaha (home of baseball’s College World Series), going behind the scenes at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo, numerous opportunities to socialize and network, and the third annual ASCE Charles Pankow Foundation Annual Architectural Engineering Student Competition. Also included are technical sessions, office visits to some of the premier architectural engineering firms in the country, a career fair with companies from around the nation, and time at nights for students to get to know one another and explore Omaha.  Learn more about the conference at www.aeistudents.org/conference

If your school is interested in hosting the 2014 AEI National Student Conference, you can submit a  proposal at the 2012 Conference. A host will be chosen at the conference in order to allow approximately two years for planning as we continue to make these conferences more fun, more relevant, and increase student participation.  This fall the National Student Officers will prepare a template to help in submitting your proposal.  A “Letter of Intent” stating that the University plans to submit a proposal and has support from your school or department to do so must be sent to the AEI Board of Governors, c/o Jennifer Balsley (jbalsley@asce.org), by February 17, 2011, in order for the proposal to be considered.

The Architectural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers is also pleased to announce the ASCE Charles Pankow Foundation Annual Architectural Engineering Student Competition for this academic year.   The competition has been created specifically to highlight and showcase the architectural engineering discipline and to strengthen the link between the architectural engineering programs and students and the Institute that is their professional home. The competition is sponsored by the Charles Pankow Foundation.  The competition will challenge students to address the design issues for a new Government Office Building located in Omaha, Nebraska. The project site is located along Riverfront Drive and the Missouri River. We would like to strongly encourage each University to participate! Learn more about the competition at: http://content.asce.org/studentcompetition/guidelines.html.

We would also like to encourage each chapter to participate in the ASCE Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders (WSCL). Each AEI Chapter will receive $500 reimbursement from ASCE for their attendance. In order to qualify for the reimbursement, participants just have to attend all of the workshop sessions. No application is required for this grant, you just have to register and show up. WSCL registration information will be available in late October/early November. The dates and locations are as follows:

Regions 8 & 9:  January 13-14, 2012 in Portland, OR

Regions 1, 2, 4 & 5:  January 20-21, 2012 in Nashville, TN

Regions 3, 6 & 7:  February 10-11, 2012 in Kansas City, MO

NEW REQUIREMENTS

This year AEI/ASCE National will be billing annual dues to all AEI Student Chapters.  In order to remain a “Chapter in Good Standing”, all schools must pay their national dues upon receipt of the bill. Bills of $25 per chapter will be mailed out in October of each year.

The other requirement to remain a “Chapter in Good Standing”,  is to submit an Annual Report.  Reports are now required from each AEI Student Chapter.  Your reports must be received no later than February 1st of each year beginning February 1, 2012. The report format and guidelines were discussed and handed out at the 2011 AEI National Conference in Oakland and are available to download from the AEI website.  The report designed by the Committee on AEI Student Activities (CAEISA) covers the calendar year (January 1 through December 31). This is a great way for your Chapter to have a historical record of the great things you are doing locally as well as create a document to help market your chapter.

Feel free to contact us or browse the new AEI Student Portal for more information including links about the 2012 AEI National Student Conference, proposal format for hosting the 2014 AEI National Student Conference, Student Chapter Bylaws, and the Annual Report Document.  Check out this new Student Portal at www.aeistudents.org or find even more information at the AEI Homepage, www.aeinstitute.org.
