Adrian J. T. Alsmith

I am a Lecturer in Philosophy at King's College London. 

I specialise in the Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science. The overall aim of my work is to understand how our capacities for bodily and mental activity structure our experience of the world and ourselves. Whilst on research leave, I have been thinking about narrative explanation and artificial systems, bodily awareness as a form of self-consciousness, and the distinction between imaginative perception and illusion (you can read a draft paper on this last topic at the Aristotelean society here - comments welcome!).

I am also an Associate Editor for the journals Analysis and Philosophy and the Mind Sciences, and a Section Editor for the forthcoming Open Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science from the MIT Press.

This year (2024) is my last year as the Philosophy Programme Chair of the European Society of Philosophy and  Psychology - my colleague James Stazicker will be taking over.

I was previously a member of the LOGOS research group at the University of Barcelona, working on Josh Shepherd's project, Rethinking Conscious Agency. I was also once part of Frédérique de Vignemont's research group at the Jean Nicod Institute, École Normale Supérieure, Paris. Before that I was a postdoctoral researcher and then a Lektor in the Philosophy Section at the University of Copenhagen, affiliated to the Centre for Subjectivity Research and the Theoretical Philosophy Research Group.
